305 rebuild or 350 build
Ok everyone I have a choice for future projects. This is one of them.
I was thinking since my engine block is the original and my car is 99.9% stock. That I should rebuild it and bore it out to a 327 or something like that. When I would rebuild it I would like to set it up to run NOS (hidden of coarse)
For the 350 I was thinking of a bore to 383 or something close to that. I also would like to run a hidden NOS system through this.
REMINDER: I'm trying to make my car fast while making it fuel efficient.
ULTIMATE GOAL: Trying to make this a sleeper car with maybe 400hp and torque
If this is possible with my 305 I will be very happy. If not then I see if I can work it out
Ideas are very welcome,
Thanks

You can't bore a 305 out to 327.
You can't bore a 350 out to 383.
You can put a 3.75" stroke crank in a 305. With stock bore, it's about 327 cid. With the more common .030" overbore, it's 334 cid.
You can put a 3.75" stroke crank in a 350. With the typical .030" overbore, it's 383 cid.
The stroke kit for a 305 will cost you about the same or more than a stroke kit for a 350. The machine shop work will cost the same.
A rebuildable 350 shortblock will run you somewhere between $50-$200. Cheap power.
If you plan on spraying it sometime, build if for spray now.
Rebuilding a 305 is a poor use of performance $'s.
Building a 334 is a poor use of performance $'s.
The difference in fuel economy between 305 or 350 TPI is minimal. Ditto 334 vs. 383 TPI. The power difference is significant.

Re: 305 rebuild or 350 build
Which do you want the most, street manners and fuel economy, lots of power, or your money in your pocket?
You're goig to have to pick 2 of those and ignore the other.
A rebuild will save you money, but with the kind of money you're talking about it wont cost you that much more to just build yourself a 350 (or 383).
If you want that much power, then you're going to want a nice rotating assembly, new heads, and a new cam, and probably ditch the TPI (I'm not a fan of it. Keep it if you want fuel economy or an empty wallet.) too so that doesnt leave much from the old engine that you'd actaully be able to reuse.
Machinework and parts are going to cost the same regardless of what size bore you're working with, so you might as well take the oppurtunity and upgrade.

If you can, start with the 350.
You can’t tell the difference looking at the outside, so your sleeper would still be there.

Re: 305 rebuild or 350 build
Looks like I'm going with the 350 build. I thought the 305 was more fuel efficient, but I was WRONG.
Now I need some more specs
"five7kid" you did a great job naming some already
Thanks in advanced guys

Re: 305 rebuild or 350 build
I have just recently learned that the 305 can get 400+hp if everything is done right.
I am still wanting to do this after the money starts to come in and the engine goes. If I get money in I'll buy a used 350, tear it down, and build it up. Or just get the money for 305 build up. My purpose for that is to keep numbers matching, if that is true
Can anyone tell me how to find if the engine matches up with the car.
Thanks
