running with no exhaust bad?

i just pulled my camaro into the garage and not having enough time to try it out last year since the engine was put in just before winter, i want to go check how everything is running on it, i want to see how the engine pulls and if tranny shift good. thing is i havent put an exhaust system on yet and don't plan on putting one for a thew months it just got the exhaust manifoils, will i screw something up if i go try it out like this, i heard i could bent a valve or something along those lines, i ain't a pro in mechanics soo thats why i am asking. I still have to put on my intake manifoil and after that it should be good to try out. Any opinions?

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

define no exhaust...no headers? or just nothing from headers and back? running open cylinder heads not only will give you an ear ache but theres nothing to help scevenge exhaust gasses and on a small scale will hurt power. if you have a set of headers on it and nothing else you'll be fine. it won't help and it won't hurt either.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

Its only got stock exhaust manifoils (headers) on right now. I just want to burn maybe a 1/2 tank of gas with it to see if everything is working good.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

I'd worry about frying something with all the hot gas getting spewed right under the hood.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

i took mine on a 100 mile trip with open 2210 long tubes to get my exhaust put on. I was behind the guy driving my car and it wasnt loud at all unless he got on it.....but inside the car is loud! cause the headers are right under your seats.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

if you have long tubes or stock cast iron headers/manifolds on you should be fine aside from the noise issues and burning stuff, but if u have shorties on you could bend/break the valves due to cool air hitting them after it is run

Can anyone varify this? 'cause I was gonna have to run my t/a to the exhaust shop, with open (shorty) headers. If this is the case, I will trailer it down their.

Old wives tail. As long as you have headers on it, you are fine. Just make sure nothing is in the way to catch fire.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

It's not an old wives tail... i bent 3 exauast valves driving to the exauast place W/ ebay specal shortie headers (1 5/8 pri, 2 1/2 colectors) on a set of stock 70's era 350 heads, about 3 or 4 years ago, it was my excuse to go to trick flow heads, but it was also Jan in NJ, W/ snow on the ground, so that could have hade somthing to do W/ it, but the fact is it can happen.

The fact is, it didnt happen from the headers. That happened from an outside issue. Why would it be ok to run manifolds, but not shorties? Manifolds have way less piping after the exhaust ports. Heat dissipation is a non issue with a header installed also. I have broke in and road tested tons of cars with shorties only.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

i would think manifolds would have a greater chance of warping valves.. heard it before but i only run LT's..

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

ohhh, i am having trouble, just replaced the intake manifoils with an edelbrock performer and its not running good at all. SOunds like its not firing on all cylinders. I got my timing pretty close i am 100% sure, all my firing order has been checked, i don't know what it is. Their is a vacuum line that goes to the coil, does that have to be in for it to work good?, I didn't put it on cause i didn't change this weird shaped thing that sticks out the intake, their is something in its place to seal it don't know if you know what i mean but, any ideas where i f~~~ up?

You have a vacuum leak and/or a timing or spark plug wire problem. Make sure the wires are right and the timing is in check. Check for vacuum leaks.

Re: running with no exhaust bad?

ok, i know its definatly closely timed cause i braught the #1 cylinder up to top dead center, i then checked my firing order and completely ridid it to be sure it was all correct. It has to be in the vacuum somewheres, but where?, like i said, does anyone know about that vacuum line that commes of the coil? must it be plugged in order for it to work?, thats the only thing i can see at the moment where its loosing vacuum. it also backfire like a b**** sounds alot like something wrong with my firing order but i wne on the internet and got one for a small block chevy. does a 350 have the same firing order as 305?, This is an lg4 out of an 81 camaro incase you guys don't know. I also changed the coil piece that spins their don't know quiet what its called the white piece, i accidently broke it taking it out, i had a spair coil and just took that piece and put it on the one i broke, only thing is its an accel supercoil that i have on and i took the piece of an ac delco one, pretty sure its the same though
