Best power steering pump?

My power steering pump is making that whiney noise and I can't stand it anymore. What do you think is the best replacement for it. I do want a resevoir. Delco does not have a resevoir. Thanx!

Delco doesn't have a reservoir? Not sure what you mean there. Many rebuilds you put your reservoir on the rebuilt pump.

I can't say I've heard any complaints about any particular PS pump source.

Re: Best power steering pump?

Thanx for your reply. I was under the impression that an o ring or seal was needed for installing your resevoir on. I did not check if that was a part I could get. My local parts store, Bennett, said that Delco has a pump, but does not offer a resevoir as part of it. Like you said, I would have to put my resevoir on it. Never having done it before, I was going to opt for purchasing one that had a resevoir. I will check with Bennett again to see if the seal or o ring was something that I could obtain to put my resevoir back on w/o any leaks. Do you know if that is what everyone does? Obviously, the price is cheaper if I use my existing resevoir. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Best power steering pump?

I used to manage a parts store and a lot of people opted for the pump without the resevoir because it was cheaper. Without fail every one of them had problems. Some bent their resevoir trying to get it off and pressed back on, but most times they just leaked. The new pump without resevoir usually comes with an o-ring. But for the small price difference I'd go (and did go) with one that had a resevoir on it. No leaks, easy install. And be sure and rent the pulley puller kit. Don't try and use a 2 or 3 jaw puller to remove the pulley. You will break it that way.

I've only done it once, the pump came with the orings, and I didn't have a problem.

Re: Best power steering pump?

Alloy, what Bennett told me was that it was about a $30 difference between the two, one w/ a res. and one w/o. That may be enough to induce me to try to install my own resevoir.
Five7, did your replacement require any special tools? Is there a thread that you know about that has the process spelled out? If not, I could check my Haynes and Chilton. I really appreciate your replies.

Re: Best power steering pump?

Parts America is a $15 difference. Ask them to match the price, or do some shopping around.

Re: Best power steering pump?

There are no worries about using a new pump and reusing the resevoir. Its not rocket science. If you can unbolt and rebolt the problem is solved. The hardest part for an average guy is getting the pulley off your old one and on the new one.

Re: Best power steering pump?

I agree for most of us here it is easy. Some people are mechanically inclined, some are not. For the extra $15 I'd not want to have to pull the pump a second time if it leaked.

Re: Best power steering pump?

Well, I completed it this weekend. I purchased the one with no resevoir. Very easy to change the resevoir and I don't have any leaks, although you have to make sure the rubber washers are in correctly. Used a rubber mallet to remove res. off of the pump. Never did this before, but recommend that if your res. is in good shape, just change it out and save the $15-$20. The worst part of it is removing and reinstalling the pulley on the front of the pump. This has to be done on the car, it seems like, because I could not get to the 3 torx bolts that hold the pump to the bracket out w/o removing the pulley first. Purchased for $14 the small pulley removal tool, parts store did not rent them, and it worked great. I just had to remove, for space considerations, the single fan and housing to be able to have some room to work. Thanks once again for all the help, truly valuable forum for me.
