50* advance timing readout!!!!!
ALright i just installed a new distributor on my car. I did the whole top dead center deal to get it timed right. Anyways i tried starting it and at the time i was running my megasquirt. I couldnt get it to idle for anything. I got fed up with the MEgasquirt and went back to my original tune.
So im i got my car started with the original tune and i got it too idle. Anyways i get my timing gun out to check for what it was at, and i found out im at 50* of advance timing. WTFFF.
I had the est cable unhooked when i checked it. I then listened for any pinging or misfiring. There was none. I thought that this was weird. So i called a friend and he said to try and see what it does at 10*.
I get it to 14* and the idle turned choppy and it died.
Any ideas guys???

Re: 50* advance timing readout!!!!!
Possibly the outer ring on the balancer has slipped. I cant see it running right being that far off, especialy with how you say it dies when it gets to 14 deg.

Re: 50* advance timing readout!!!!!
I'd use a timing wheel and a piston stop to make sure the pointer is still pointing to the mark on the balancer when the piston is at TDC.
I had the same problem years ago using an adjustable timing pointer. Car ran great at 45* until I rechecked TDC to find out the pointer was off 8* and it was actually at 37*.
The timing mark on the balancer should be directly over the keyway if you want to see if it's slipped.

Also make sure that your balancer isn't one that goes with this style of timing pointer:

Re: 50* advance timing readout!!!!!
Sounds like the distrubitor is 1 tooth off (not hard to do).
Pull the distrubitor up just high enough to turn the rotor and turn it
one tooth. Then drop it back in; the oil pump will not be lined up.
You can roll/bump the engine over to get it to drop in, turn the
distrubitor to where you think 10 deg is put the clamp on and fire it up.
If IIRC one tooth is 32 deg (in the 30's anyhow).
