DIS...

What do I need to put a DIS system on a 1988 305? I saw a ignition control for DIS that was from MSD but what else do I need, and how do I do it? Thanks.

Re: DIS...

You'd need the same thing ANY motor needs.

A crank position sensor, a cam position sensor, a set of coil packs, and a computer that can produce the correct signals to fire the correct coils at the correct times.

I could be wrong (well I AM wrong, but besides just that, mistaken), but I don't think being a 305 has much to do with that.

Re: DIS...

well yes I know that...i just figured people dont think its worth doing anything to a 305 so they would not answer...anyways...
Where can I get that stuff? what ECU could I use? Comander 950, FAST XFI, LS1/LS6? I am trying to free up as much horsepower as I can by removing as much friction as possible...

Not sure what connection "friction" has with any of this?

Yes, lots of ECMs will support DIS. Not sure about the Holley, but I kind of don't think so; FAST, yes; stock ECMs for LS motors, of course, but that would be rather a pain to retrofit, with the multiple 02 sensors and all of whatever else; the newer Accel does, IIRC; Big Stuff has a model; no doubt there are others.

The distributor is not much of a power robber and certainly not enough of one to justify the huge cost of going DIS.

That exactly ehat I wanted to know, just to see if it was worth it... well are there any other benefits to be gained from DIS?

Re: DIS...

If you thoroughly enjoy spending much of your time troubleshooting phantom problems, then yea, that could be the "benefit".
IIRC "DIS" is the bane of many 4th gen owners existence. Far from a "great" item.

Re: DIS...

You won't lose any friction by changing, because the cam sensor would probably go in the same location the distributor used to be in. But theres no drag there anyway, like there is at say - the water pump, or alternator.

I just gotta figure out how to set everyhting up, in the future i am going to put in a D1SC with an intercooler...
