Buying a 1989 Firebird Tonight - Few Questions!

I am getting a 89 firebird with a 2.8l v6 in it. It has about 128k original miles.

He is askin 1500, is that a good price?

How reliable are these cars? I am looking for something that will run for a few years at least.

I want to add some power, what are my best options?

I also want a nice loud exhaust, is that possible on a v6 or would it sound dumb?

Thanks!

The 2.8 was a dog. Expecting to get reliable "few years at least" out of a 19 y/o car with 128K is unrealistic IMO. If you're good with cars and don't mind working on it, and it has a good body and int, then the price isn't bad.

I expected I will need general maintence.

The paint is fading, but the body is straight, really good interior.

The 2.8l V6's were prone to cracking.

Usually happened around 130k miles, if memory serves. . .

JK about the failure miles. But, the 3.1l V6's that came out in 1990 (or was it 1991) were much improved, and bolt in place of the 2.8l.

Hmm, maybe I will consider a swap later on.

I really just need a car that will get me from a to b, and not break down every week.

I love firebirds too, which is why I am getting this.

Isnt it supposed to have t-tops? I thought that was standard? This one does not.

Hey man Im on the same boat as you. Im picking up an 89 Formula this friday, except this one has a 305 TBI and 81 thousand orgional miles. I plan on putting a few bolt ons on it but nothing major because I lack the money, time, and tools. Congrats on the buy though and I hope it lasts you awhile.

Re: Buying a 1989 Firebird Tonight - Few Questions!

a couple of months ago i picked up an 86 firebird with a 2.8 for that price an it had 60,000 miles on it only prob was a bad fuel pump and stale gas. I took it home replaced all the ignition put in a new battery threw some gas dryer and some fuel injector cleaner and it ran perfect. Only complaint is the power the 2.8 puts out like 130 stock and like 100 to the wheels. I would buy it man and if your engine craps out on you just swap in a 3.4l easiest swap in the world from what ive read on this forum.
