Starter question
Hi,
I just started having this problem and I am thinking its couple of thigs. My indicisivness led me to ask this question.
Better ask than throw parts at it.
Right now, its cold here in CO. My car was starting without a hitch. Now, however, first time I start it whether its been sitting for hours or minutes the first try the starter grinds. I just hear griding noise and it does not start. It sounds awful. Than the next try the car starts up immidiatelly.
Now its pretty apparent that it might be the starter, however I am second guessing myself here. I am really not sure how much timing has to do with this. Mine is about 8 advanced and ever since I set it there my car has been starting as soon as you turn the key.
What would your guess be??

Re: Starter question
sounds like a starter or flywheel/flexplate issue. if the teeth on the starter are good, check the ones all the way around on the flywheel/flexplate. my iroc used to do this all the time. either crank it a couple of times till it moved the flexplate enough to get good teeth or take the car out of gear, push it, the slam it back into park to get it to good teeth. needless to say at that rate it didn't take long to get a new flexplate . the teeth were worn on one section of the flexplate.

Re: Starter question
First guess would be a sticking solenoid in the starter.

Re: Starter question
Took the starter out and replaced it with a new one. The old one was pretty warn and you can see where it was not cooperating with the flex plate. The new one, however makes a bit of noise. Its not grinding noise but its whining noise after it starts the engine. Its just whines a tiny bit before. The instructions say that starter might make some noise that the old starter did not do. The car starts fine no grinding just that whining noise. Its very quick and it sounds like the starter is making it.
Flywheel looked in really good condition teeth wise.
