Need Help! 88' Formula Problems
Hello everyone. I'm new to the forums, but not the birds. I'm Dave AKA daveysaun. The problem I'm having is I've got an 88' Formula, 305 TPI. Auto. Pretty stout as long as it's running. I've done the search thing and found similar problems but not exactly. If I let the thing sit for a couple of days I can go out and hit the key, and instantly fires right up. I'll drive it to work, 8 miles. Let it set for my 12 hr shift. And when I leave, hit the key, an wa wa wa no start for a couple of seconds (about 10 to be exact) and then it stumbles to life reaking of unburned fuel and smoking out the pipes. When I got it, she ran pretty good. Then one day I took off pretty hard, and let off the pedal, it felt like it was going to die. Like it was out of fuel. Had a quarter of a tank in it, so I added more and she ran fine but started doing what I described. I've done a complete tuneup, 8mm Taylor wires, NGK plugs. Accel cap, Accel rotor, and Accel module. I'm wondering about coolant temp sensor... Sometimes they go haywire and take longer to cool off than the engine.
Also, do you hear the fuel pump prime up before you crank it?

I'll try the CTS. But would that affect starting. I can hear the pump prime, so I know it's getting fuel.

The other HUGE problem that reoccurs often is the MAF. MAF death is more common than you think.
I think the coolant temp is referenced during starting by the PROM. That, along with the MAF, and throttle position.
