is that a fuel injected motor ,it sounds like a hesittation to me. my tpi would do that until i cleaned the throttle blades a body

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
give it a good cleaning in the throttle to make sure its not sticking. make sure its tuned good and not hesitating because of poor ignition or a overly rich condition
also aluminum lightweight underdrive pullies help let the motor rev up, basically giving you better throttle response
higher stall converter will help too

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
I think it's the nature of the auto beast honestly. There's a company in cali called level10 transmissions that can build you a killer fast tranny... or so I've heard. Corvette servo? All that other stuff? I don't know what that means. But I sure would like to. - as far as a dirty throttle body, man that would have to be a heck of alot of carbon to stand in the way of the throttle opening all the way when your foot mashes down that pedal.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
ive had a few carbed small blocks and never a manual trans but when ever i had a hesitation it was always the carb adjustment or something tweaked with the ignition. For your info a very small lip of cake behind that blade will cause alot more off idle hesitation than you think. if you havent scrubed down the carb in the last 10k it probaly needs it.check your fuel filter.unless your motor is reving from the second you start on the gas(before you hit the floor) i would look into air and fuel

idk my car seems to go hard when i stomp on it, but its not an INSTANT downshift sometimes. but that stall and underdrive pullies get that motor instantly revved up before it shifts

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
ok maybe i should clarify the question abit it dosent happen when im just starting to move or anythinig or reving the engine, im talking about 60-ish km/ph it happens, i punch it to pass or something and the car slows a bit then it goes normal i think this maybe somthing in the tranny or tc but im not sure just wanting to al least reduce it, also my car has a shift kit if that would do anything i dont know the brand previous owner installed it. i think orr89rocz knows what im talking about

After my trans go install from Pro Built, my downshifts are much harder and faster.

Get a manual. Flat out lol i hated that crap in my cars, Had it in my 81 silverado, my parents trucks still do it, my brothers lancer, everything, unless its stick shift. The ONLY thing i've seen not do it, is my buddies 87 rx7 TII that he mocked 2 turbos onto, but thats because of the 2 turbos and i'm used to waitint for them to spool in any car so you dont notice

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
I've had new cars, fast cars and old cars - I have to agree that the only way to stop that delay is with a manual. Auto tranny's seem to have to think about what's happening for a half second once the throttle opens up all the way. It's not broken, that's just how it is. Information can only travel so fast, so the completly mechanical manual tranny will always start faster.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
The trans shouldnt cause the lag unless its slipping. How does the motor behave? Does it just sit there after you hit the gas, or does it act like its revving in neutral before it goes?
FWIW, with an early car without an electronic throttle or any garbage to reduce the torque output on tip in, it should go instantly (or at least spin the tires) regardless of whether its an auto or a manual when you stab the gas.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
My car does the same thing. Kick down is painfully slow. I know its not engine hesitation because if I hold it in second gear then smash the pedal its an instant kick in the ***. If I let it upshift to third or 4th then mash the pedal I can hear my engine instantly rev up against the converter but the car doesn't go anywhere. It takes the transmission about a full second "grab" second gear like it should, then it starts pulling.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
Me too. Honestly, I've owned alot of cars. My camaro does this, my 2002 crown vic does this and did when it was new when I bought it in 02. My old mazda did it. I think it's just the way automatics are. Maybe not if you have a corvette or something with a performance auto tranny. I can hear my CAI suck in before I feel the go in any auto. When I had my probe and my storm (manual cars) The CAI's made that sucking noise, but it was at the exact same time the clutch grabbed, not a half second later. Brennan, I don't think your car is broken, if you want metter response from your tranny get a performance rebuild kit. A CAI or TB spacer may help throttle response and get you a little closer to your "goal of go" though...

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
well the corvette servo would help a bit. The thing is the line pressure is low from stock and the car is meant to shift somewhat smooth from the factory. the vette servo increases pressure and lets it shift harder, that and a shift kit will help you out alot.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
On my Nova with a th350, you can basically adjust when the tranny should kickdown depending on how far the throttle is open. I'm able to set it to downshift at something as little as 25% throttle or as much as 90% throttle, it's very convenient.
As far as the time it takes to finally drop a gear and go, it's basically about 0.5 to 1 second.
A good shift kit will also help in harder shifts/downshifts. Will get rid of the smooth painfully slow shifts and help your tranny last longer.

There will always be a delay, not much you can do about it.
It's the same as someone doing an easy downshift in a manual.

Mine does this too man, sometimes it will go like no tommarow, others it just sits a second then takes off, its annoying, The lucas transmission stuff is good stuff though.

Transgo shift kit along with new servo. With my old 700-R4 and a shift kit, it shifted instantly as soon as I stabbed the gas. I actually liked it better then my stick.

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
is there a way to tell what kind of shift kit i have in my car or to see if i even have one because im just going by what this guy who sold it to me said and he told me a few things that turned out to be bs , it shifts nice and hard but seeing it would be better cuz if there isnt one there will be

Re: how do i reduce the delay between foot down and go with auto?
Buy a good stall! They tend to apply power in proportion to throttle application. Very different feeling than a cheap $350 converter.Something with a STR of 2.5+ . I like to program E-transmissions to downshift as WOT is reached, not after. 700R4's have weights and springs (governer) that will effect shift points.... while the tightest (correct) TV cable adjustment will ensure fast downshifts.

It sounds like it could just be the lean spike when the secondaries first open,
bring the peddle down a bit more gradually and see if it does the same thing.

Sounds like quadrajet bog to me. Happens when the secondary air valve opens too quickly rather than gradually like it should.
Two typical causes (sometimes both): 1) Choke pull-off (called "vacuum break" by the factory) leaks and releases too soon; 2) Air valve tension mis-adjusted, allows the AV to open too quickly.
There is a tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage "Tuning for Performance with your Computer-Controlled Quadrajet". There is also a sticky at the top of the Carburetor forum with a copy of the GM manual for the E4ME carb - goes over the AV adjustment procedure (and has pictures).
