motor not sitting level
It was noticed revently that my motor sits well not level. You can visually see it sits lower on the left side then the right, i took a picture of a level just to make it easier to see in pictures.
its not that its just not sitting on unlevel ground, the motor always looks like this. In addition when i installed the hooker long tubes not only did the passenger side (low side) hit the engine k-member when it was up on the hoist you could see the passenger side collector is noticeably lower then the drivers side.
Just had new motor mounts put in at the beginning of the year by a shop so its not sagging mounts. My only thought is maybe something to do with how its sitting in the clamshell? but im not thinking that because i had to jack the motor up a couple of times when i did the headers and the mount seemed to be sitting fine.
what should i be checking?

Re: motor not sitting level
i always assumed the clamshells were the same on both sides. How can you tell which one belongs on which side? a performance shop installed the mounts this last time and i think the mounts came with new clamshells, very easily could have ended up on the wrong sides

Re: motor not sitting level
bump, need some more thoughts on this
the clamshells dont really have a left and right do they? the actual rubber mounts have to be universal. They were just done at the beginning of last summer, so figuring somethings off there, might justg replace the rubber mounts again, thats just a pita

the part of the clamshell that bolts to the engine have a left and a right, though i would feel that this is more for moving the engine over rather than up or down

its pouring out right now but ill get aroudn to trying that, ya i wonder if the rubber is just bad in the moutn on the low side
if not ill have to pull apart the clamshells and ya fun. Lol changed the moutns myself before. Paid to have it done beginning of last summer cause its such a pita. But i guess ill have to do it again, ill check the mount tmw but i doubt i can really tell without pulling the mount right out

Re: motor not sitting level
Get pics of the actual rubber inserts and how they're situated in the mount. You CAN put the rubber inserts in upside down. There IS a left and a right to the shell that mounts to the block. The shop should've had no reason to remove those though.

i guess theres a chance he could have had both brackets out at the same time and accidentally put one on the wrong side. Does anyone know how to identify them as the right and left side?

Re: motor not sitting level
I'm not saying they're dumb enough just that it could happen. All you have to do is look at how the ears on the inserts are sitting against the engine side of the clamshell. They should be in the cutouts. This WILL cause an engine not sitting level issue. Ask me how I know.
Actually not upside down. Backwards is what I meant to say.

Re: motor not sitting level
okay backwards is possible, i more meant a lot of shops are dumb enough hell they might install them upside down, i use a pretty good speed shop, but things happen
okay so they could be rotated in wrong and the mounts could be on the wrong side, ill check in a day or two, cars covered in snow and ice outside, itll melt and the cars getting moved in the garage
ill check then

Re: motor not sitting level
Mine sits a little unlevel too.
I have a 355 carb but its no wear near the unlevel as yours is. However it does sit lower on the pass side too.
My mounts were changed out by a mechanic about 6 years ago. That was with the 305 in there. But its always sit unlevel. Tho IDK if it did B4 the motor mount swap or not.
What are some issues that could be associated with this other than header flange clearance?

Re: motor not sitting level
my hooker long tubes actually needed to be dented in a bit on the passenger side, 3 tubes hit the k-member, realized after that it was sitting off, kind of explained the bad fit.
biggest issue is a vibration. If the motors not sitting even youre going to throw it out of balance a little bit

Re: motor not sitting level
Hehehe...nice thought
Vibration is a possibility, but only if there is a part of the motor touching the car body or frame. I had one once when I mis-installed the collector flange on a set of shorty headers. They tapped against the framerail on the right side..just enough to **** me off and fix it =)
