Condensation on rocker arms???

I have started my motor several times after getting it back together without fully reaching operating temperature and for a maximum of about 2 minutes at a time, I have been trying to get the timing and idle right. I pulled the valve covers to recheck the valves and make sure they were not too tight or loose. When I pull the valve covers I discover condensation on the rocker arms, (both heads), it looked just like the outside of a cold drink on a hot day and a small amount of water in the oil in the top of the head.

After searching and reading other entries it appears I have never had the motor hot enough to "burn off" the water vapor build up. Is this a correct diagnosis?

Also no noticable water on dipstick or oil in radiator, and no significant loss of coolant.

Re: Condensation on rocker arms???

Sorry I dont have any pics, but I would guesstimate that there was about a tablespoon full(total) in each head. Total being on rocker arms and in oil, most of it was on the rocker arms.

Well, dry it all off, run it again, then see if it is still there, if so i might be worried.

Re: Condensation on rocker arms???

I drained the oil today and it had a noticeable amount of water in it. I drained the coolant and didn't notice much oil at all. I should have mentioned previously that I am using FelPro 1094 coated head gaskets, I installed them dry and I had to stab the heads a couple of times to line them up. Did I screw something up when installing the heads, I did block sand, and wipe with brake clean the block and the heads. Just curious if anyone else has had to "redo" a 1094 gasket install.

I am going to replace the oil and coolant and see if it happens again, if so I guess I'll be tearing it back down to find the problem.

Re: Condensation on rocker arms???

Pull the heads

Head gasket is dumping coolant in the cyls and oil

This is NOT something you can wait on

Re: Condensation on rocker arms???

I am not really in a big hurry to pull the heads. This is not a daily driver for me so I have all the time in the world to work on it. I am hoping, but doubtful that the oil pan got some water in it when I was making all my changes. I had to drop the oil pan a bit to put the camshaft in and it was "open" for quite a while (at least a week). I just want to see if I get lucky, I'll let run for a minute or two and then pull the valve covers to see if I get the same result. If it is the same result then oh well back to work, if not though time to continue on.
