Harmonic Balancer Question
When installed correctly, how much depth should there be from the end of the crank snout to the front of the h.b.? I've had issues with installing the harmonic balancer lately. My h.b. hub has a depth of 2.40" and I can only get the h.b. 1.35" on the snout. From what I've measured, my h.b. is hitting the timing chain sprocket. I'm pretty sure I had the bottom timing chain sprocket lined up with the upper sprocket, however when I installed the balancer it looks like there is a good bit of distance between the timing chain cover and the back of the balancer. My balancer is a 6.75" balancer that is not as thick as factory balancers so I wonder if it looks like its not installed correctly because of the reduced thickness of the balancer. HELP!!!

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question
if you believe the balancer is up against the crank sprocket then that is as far as it is going to go...

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question
Both pieces (timing sprocket and balancer) go on until they bottom out. When you installed the timing sprocket did you drive it on until it hit the flat, machined area on the snout of the crank? If so, just do the same thing with the balancer. Also, make sure to use a balancer installation tool to put it on. The old hammer and block of wood trick doesn't always get them all the way on, besides the risk of damage to the balancer doing it that way. Most of the ones I've ever put on, you can usually see about a quarter inch of the shiny hub surface sticking out past the seal in the timing cover.
