91 305 rod help

k after disasembling my stocker 305 from a 91,, some jacknob moved some of my rod caps around,, and i may now have them mixed up,, im pretty soncerned about this...

my question is..

is there a way to match them back up with the casting numbers? (where can i find this info)

or,,, will it be possible to find all the matches with a micrometer?..

p.s all machining and balancing is done for free if that matters

Not really no You need to get one of those sets of metal stamps to mark the rod and main caps.

Well if machining is done for free then...

You could try to mach them up with a bore gauge, but if machining is free then just resize them.

If you decide to match, let us know how many of the 40,320 ways to match 8 caps with 8 rods you try before you find the right one.

An old machinist I know, used to match rod caps and main caps by matching the cross hatch machine marks inside of bearing bore. You might try that if you don't want to re-size all the rods.
I've done that on main caps that I knocked off in the floor before I could stamp a number on them. Now I stamp them before taking off, same for rod and caps.

Uh. No. Not 16. Apeiron is right. This cap could go on this rod or this rod or this rod or this rod or this rod. Or even this cap over here could go on this rod or this rod or this rod.
Just get'em machined.

Re: 91 305 rod help

There are 8 caps that can go on the first rod, so that's 8. Then for each of those 8 ways, there are 7 caps that can go on the second rod, so that's 8x7=56. Now for each of those 56 ways, there are 6 caps that can go on the third rod, so 56x6=336. Continuing that way, you get x5=1,680 x4=6,720, x3=20,160, x2=40,320, until finally you have only one last cap to go on the last rod.

A more concise way to say it mathematically would be that the number of permutations of 8 elements from a set of 8 is equal to the factorial of 8! = 40,320.
