1000 horsepower van lives!

Anyone remember this? It runs! Here's 2 videos from the drag strip-

test run

1/8th mile run

It managed to do 96 mph in 7.65 seconds. The 60 foot time was 1.87. We're hoping for high 11 second 1/4 mile times at about 115 mph. I have to put in a roll bar, a firewall and also make the back window open and close then it will be pretty much complete

That is super sick!!! That has to be an awesome feeling shooting down the track like that! I am simply amazed at what I just saw!

I was reading your other post and I was curious about a question that I didn't see answered. Is the turbine powering the rear wheels? I'm assuming if so that its doing it via the ford 9" that you mentioned?

That is really amazing, congrats on getting that running!!

Re: 1000 horsepower van lives!

Think you can stick around and answer some questions this time?

-Why does it shoot fireballs at seemingly random times?
-How do you engage it? Clutch?
-I thought turbines didn't like shock loads, is this a dual shaft one? (I don't know much about turbines, only industrial power generation stuff)
-Strange, no burnout... Is that all in your launching skill, or is that partly the powerband of the turbine?

That's pretty wild, i'd like to see a video of it driving around, or something. Or a picture of the controls in the "cockpit"?

Re: 1000 horsepower van lives!

I would think that the no burnout has to be because of the powerband of the turbine. I mean look how long it takes to get going (as do most jet powered vehicles)

Those fireballs are quite ominous... I woudlnt want to be anywhere near the back of that thing...

In before the lock, you better make it 3rd gen related in a hurry!

Re: 1000 horsepower van lives!

This is thirdgen related, I use my thirdgen to drive to the parts store when I work on this.

Yes, the turbine drives the rear wheels and it's the dual shaft type. There's 3 turbine wheels in this thing. 2 of them drive the compressors in the front, the last one drives a reduction box that takes the 30,000 or so rpm and drops it down to 2150. 2150 is too low so I step it up 2.25 to 1 in the transfer case and then it goes to the 9 inch with 3.50 gears. I can hold the third turbine wheel (free turbine) stopped and bring the others up to full power. When it's time to go, I just let off the brake and floor the stock V6. There's an in and out box in the transfer case and there's a disc brake on the free turbine so I can stop it to put the transfer case in gear without grinding.

The fireballs- I pump raw fuel through spraybars in the exhaust (75% diesel, 25% gasoline) which makes the clouds of fuel vapor. There's a Compucar gas solenoid from one of their excellent N2O kits that spurts a little raw fuel into the combuston chamber, the raw fuel doesn't burn very well and makes a little fire streak out past the turbines which lights the fuel vapor for the fireball effect. I plan on doing the flame show all the way down the track. The general public thinks if a jet engine doesn't shoot fire then it must not be working properly, unless it the engine on the 747 they're sitting in.

The launch- it's all in the powerband. It gets out about 50 feet and and then it really starts pulling. If you listen, you can hear the free turbine spool up.

Here's a few pictures-

Keep an eye on my youtube page, there should be more video soon. Subscribe to my page and leave some comments.

I'm planning on visiting some thirdgen shows, should I bring my Z28 or my van?
