I am going to pick up a '89 GTA in Texas soon and was looking for a set of glow gauges and on the description of the gauges it states "84-87 Trans Am with 120 MPH" and some other guages saying "88-92 Trans Am with 140MPH" I don't know if its a typo or if the car I am picking isnt an actual '89 but the top speed on the pics that the owner sent me reads 120MPH? anyone know whats going on here?

Check the RPO codes. Y84. Go to the gtasource page and read how to authenticate the thing. My '89s had 140 speedos iirc.

 

my 89 also says 140 maybe it been changed.

 

I thought all GTA's got 140 speedo's, and 8k tachs ..

Digital dashes do not apply ..

 

Alrite I got a response from the Owner....he said that the previous owner of the car got a different cluster from a junkyard! That was close!

Did you already buy the car... is it the same one you show in your profile, or will it be a second '89 GTA for you?

And as far as I know, odometers cannot be adjusted. So beware, if the speedo has been changed, the mileage isn't likely to be accurate.

I'm usually pretty trusting, but that's kind of an important detail for a seller not to have disclosed up front. So I'd definitely verify the VIN, RPOs and mileage on that car before buying it.

 

Yeah I did verify the VIN from a chilton book that I have. I guess the previous owner of the car didnt care if it was an exact replacement or not!

 

My 88 has the digital dash. I'm still wondering if the dash goes all the way up to 199mph. I know once it hits 199km/h it just starts blinking at ya.

 

Damn!! What if that badboy got to that actual top speed!
