bigger springs for comp cam?

i have a comp cam and they reccommend a set of their springs i was wondering if they are necessary or if stock springs will work because its not that agressive of a cam. i have a 89 just rebuilt 350 tpi with new springs in the rebuilt heads i dont plan on running any higher than 5500 rpm the max max will it work? also does anyone know what the spring pressure is on stock springs?

thanks

Re: bigger springs for comp cam?

I am running the same cam with new stock springs. Friend is using the cam with used stock springs. Those springs arent needed but i sudgest getting new stock ones. My motor has been 6500 and no valve float, although that was an accident.

Personally, I would never use stock springs with an aftermarket cam, and would certainly replace the retainers to get rid of those heavy exhaust rotators.

Re: bigger springs for comp cam?

Thee extreme energy cams are much more agressive than a "stock" cam or a factory high performance cam. You should run a spring that will keep the valvetrain in control at high rpm. I would remove and check the seat pressure of your springs on your rebuilt heads. You need about 90 to 115 lbs seat pressure for these cams. A "stock" gm spring only has about 60lbs seat pressure. it will run but probabily will give up some power at high rpm to early valve train float. Any good local auto machine shop can check the spring pressure for ya. I would use a Comp 981 spring at minimum. This is a "Drop on replacement" spring with no machining required. I would check and adjust the installed height to 1.70" to 1.73" If shimming is required use Comp cams shim pack#4753
You can go ahead and use the stock GM springs if you just have to. They will physically fit and run fine (at low rpm) but...But don;t expect the valvetrain to do what its claimed to do with the Comp extreme cam. (make more power)
if your springs are not up to snuff just sell them off to some one rebuilding a "stock motor" to finance the cost of the new proper springs.
Other good stock diameter high perf springs that will work are Lunati 73943 Isky 205D Crane 99848 , Elgin/Pioneer RV1943X

The Comp 981 springs are less than $70 retail so you really have no reason to not "do it right" the first time.
