GM keys

This isn't really an "after market" question, but no other board fits this question.

I no longer have an original set of GM keys for my 85 Trans Am, but I do have the original punch outs from the keys. The punch outs have keycodes on them, and the owners manual says new keys can be made using the codes if the originals are lost. The keys I have now work, but I'd rather have a new, unworn set, and a set that are actually made by GM. Plus copying a key that is worn doesn't always yield a duplicate that works.

The question is, can GM still make me a set of keys if I give them the codes from the punchouts?

If so, does anyone know how much they would cost me?

Re: GM keys

It's an 85, so I don't have to worry about the VATS, and that's cheaper than I had expected.

Re: GM keys

I've gone to GM for original keys before too. it was about $12 for a VATS key for my 91, but only 2 or 3 for my 87 camaro without VATS.

Re: GM keys

Probably cant cut the key by vin for an 87. GM started keeping them on record around 89. If you have the cutouts, and they have a key code, they can probably use those. Not sure wehat you're talking about brad_26 when you say "programmed". If you're referring to vats keys, they're at least $26 a piece, and they're not "programmed" you just have to know what resistance your original key was, and they cut you the proper key (there are 15 different keys).

Re: GM keys

They didn't cut mine by using the VIN or any records, I took them the keys that I had (the 87's were Axxess copies, the 91's were original and I wanted a copy) and they just used those to make copies. I took them to a local dealership and I suplied the blanks for the 87. got 'em from ebay.

Re: GM keys

Hopefully GM can make a set of keys based off either my VIN or the original punchouts that I have. I would rather not get a set copied from the keys I currently have becasue they're worn, and I've had trouble with getting keys made off of worn down oringals.

I'll have to go to a dealer and ask around.

Re: GM keys

If you have to have copies made off of your current worn out keys you could take them to a lock smith and they could cut you one better than a place like home depot that uses a machine. a guy that ones a hardware store near me cuts 'em by hand.
