It does sound like a lifter. with the exaust leak one would expect that when he reved it the exaust leak to speed up as well. Wit the ticking going completely away on a rev, I would think that one of the lifters is not getting the oil it needs at the low rpms. I have experienced that and had 2 lifters that were toast.. better question is when you have that tick that sounds like an exaust leak but when you forget to plug the #7 cyl ignition in it goes away......

#7 cyl? its a v6. but lifter is what i was thinking, which works out good cause theres a 2.8l bird at the junkyard i might be able to get some cheap lifters

Yea I know it was a v-6. I had the same sound on mine and it is a v-8 Only ting is my sound goes away when there is no ignition in #7 perhaps you have an odd missfire or one of the lifters has gave on you. just sayin.

Although it sounds like a light tapping noise, that could be a rod knock too. Notice it went away at high rpm until it started to come back down too. Mine did that when I had a rod knock.

Sounds just like the loud tapping on my gf's car...so will these lifters come out with a magnet? If not how much work is it to get em out?

Lifter tap wouldnt be that fast would it? A lifter would only move every other revolution. I had a mysterious lifter tap in my L03 for like a month and it went away for whatever reason, good or bad, but it was nowhere near that fast.

when i get the money to do ANYTHING with the car im gunna do a basic tune up with fan belts, hoses, plugs, fluids, etc. see if that helps at all, if not i might just take it to a mechanic... a couple of my friends dads are mechanics so i should be able to get a deal

Re: does this sound like the lifters or wtf is this?
Exhaust leaks are COMMONLY mistaken for cam/lifter problems. If you haven't done anything to the motor it's pretty rare for a hydraulic lifter to just up and fail on its own.
I'm really curious, because i'm bad at diagnosing mystery idling tapping noises. I have one, and i'm pretty sure it's my loose collector bolts... Be sure to post back when you do find the problem and fix it.

Even if they are using roller lifters I'd avoid it...

Re: does this sound like the lifters or wtf is this?
change the oil and try a thicker oil. see if it changes it. i had a s-10 that sounded like that. i believe the shortblocks the same as yours. if i put 5-30 in it it tapped like hell. i put 20-50 in it. it went away. it's cheaper than tearing down the valvtrain. or pulling the oil pan.
