Alternator squeal?
I just re-installed my alternator and now i have a high pitch squeal. its the same alternator i jsut had it checked and found out it was my battery that was just drained from a light left on. Duh but here's my question
Does the alternator need to be slighlty adjusted for the belt or does anyone have any ideas for else could be causing the squealing between the belts and the alternator?? The car drives but still squeals like a banshee

Re: Alternator squeal?
If the battery was COMPLETELY drained down, then the alt is now doing its maximum possible amount of work trying to charge it back up. It makes a high-pitched noise while working hard.
Give it a day or 2, and if it goes away after some use, then that's all it was.

Another dumb question- are you shure you have the belt tight enough? With a high load on the alt, the belt could start slipping, but it will make quite a racket. Another thing that could be is that the brushes in the alt are going out or while you had the alt off you knocked it around some and caused one of the components to be misaligned. Just a thought.

Re: Alternator squeal?
im at work now but in the morning i will tighten it some more./ First time removing and installing an alternator. Im almsot positive it just needs to be tightened with the belt. The battery was half dead and recharged.
my next problem is idle which i will do the proper steps to fix that. but for the life of me i cant understand why they built so much around the valve cover gaskets. i have to disasemmble half the engine bay to take off two covers to change the gaskets to fix an oil leak. I have to pay someoen to do it because I dont trust myself to put everything back as so.
thanks for the input guys

No need to pay anyone for anything- the valve cover gaskets are actually really simple, and so is the stuff covering them. If you are really worried about what goes where, take many detailed pics of everything before disassembly. For the most part though, its standard stuff- vacuum lines, spark wires, breather and pvc hoses and some wiring, all of which has (almost) dummy proof connectors.
