Car: Custom 1992 Camaro Z28 25th Anniver
Engine: 5.7L V8 350 L98 TPI
URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

Engine: CURRENTLY STOCK L98 5.7L V8 350 TPI, 3:23 rear, rebuilt 700r4 auto tranny with all new performance parts (kevlar bands for instance), and shift kit, stock manifold... I will be having it remanufactured (All parts machined to factory specs, new water pump, oil pump, filters, pistons, wires, hoses, gaskets, seals, bearings, distributor, spark plugs, rotor, cap, thermostat, belt, timing set, frost plug, rings, lifters). They will then be installing New pistons with apparently flat heads, and a new camshaft.

The problem with the camshaft will be AIRCARE!! Yes, I live in BC and we have Aircare every 2 years. Mine in next year.

I want to find a cam that will:

1. Excellent LOW end range
2. Excellent MID end range
3. REALLY WANT THIS - Have LOPE.. the MOST I can possibly get.
4. Keep the stock chip
5. Still stay with the 92octane gas I use
6. MOST IMPORTANT: PASS AIRCARE!!

But I don't know HOW to possibly figure out WHAT CAM to get that will meet ALL my expectations.. How do you figure out what specs will work? How do you know what specs will give you so much lope? and HOW can you figure out what WILL and what will NOT pass aircare? Plus do all this on the first try?

I need to know this BEFORE MONDAY as the car goes into the shop MONDAY!

Re: URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

lopey idles and clean emissions dont mix real well.
idle lope is secondary to shifting the power curve of the motor to a higher band.
lopey idles=rich which will flunk your test.
call the any of the cam companys they will help you.
do a search this board is filled with helpful info..

Re: URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

"Lope" and "emissions" are not found in the spec for the same camshaft.

Neither are "lope" and "TPI".

And most especially, neither are "lope" and "stock chip".

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news; but reality just kind of is what it is.

I'd suggest a Comp "302" grind. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2D08%2D302%2D8 That's about all you can run and still have any hope of passing emissions without any programming.

The two in the Small Block Chevy 1987-98
305-350(Except LT1 & LT4) O.E. with Hydraulic Roller Camshaft

Were suggested..

Would any of those work? Which would be better?

The second one, the one with "302" in the part number, is the one I suggested; it's the {drum roll please} "302" grind {cymbal crash}. Comp part # 08-302-8. The other one, the "300" grind, would be better for a 305.

Re: URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

There are several cams out there that pass that are hyd. roller but I don't think any of them will lope. I have seen guys pass with zz4motors but it is not considered an emissions legal cam. I don't know if they make you present documantion of aftermarket parts like California, but the ZZ4 will pass 48 states in the US if you have emissons legal exhaust, smog stuff and have the car tuned right.

Are you sure the 302 will work? I have stock chip, 1.5 factory rollers and MUST be emissions friendly.

I will have new springs, but am not sure if the .480/.480 will work with my setup? Need to know the answer to this ASAP.

300 Specs:

*Note: Hydraulic Roller for factory roller cam engine with stock Tuned Port Injection and stock computer.

Operating Range: 1000-5000 RPM
Duration Advertised: 262° Intake / 264° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 206° Intake / 210° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.7 Rockers: .450'' Intake / .480'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

302 Specs:

*Note: Hydraulic Roller for factory roller cam 305 & 350 engines with TPI and modified computer.

Operating Range: 1200-5200 RPM
Duration Advertised: 264° Intake / 274° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 210° Intake / 220° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.7 Rockers: .480'' Intake / .480'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

Note they put "Modified Computer"... That part worries me..

Which one of these will have the most lope to it? More "CAM" sounding?

Re: URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

The Crane Compu-Cam #2032 is supposed to work just fine with the stock computer prom and emissions requirements as well. Just another one you might want to consider.

Re: URGENT: Help to Select the RIGHT CAMSHAFT

That Crane cam (104224) is very slightly larger duration than the Comp; just a couple of degrees. It is 50-state legal. The Comp has more lift than the Crane. The 2 cams will produce similar results. Either will work very well in an otherwise unmodified TPI 350. That's what they're both made for. Either is borderline too much for an unmodified computer and a 305, which is why the catalogs refer to that.

"Lope" and worrying about "modified computer" do not belong in the same post.

Neither of those 2 cams will produce any "lope". If you're concerned about "unmodified computer" and/or emissions, then "lope" is not for you. "Lope" = emissions-hostile and computer-incompatible.

Be realistic.
