Breaking loose head bolts.

It sure would be easier to use an impact gun to break cylinder head bolts loose.

Can I do that without tearing anything up? (ie warping a head, jarring cam bearings loose, any other crazy thing I haven't thought of)

never tried an impact on them i just done mine the other day and i used a ratchet and a piece of pipe on it with some help from my dad or my wife.and the book says it is a good idea to take the heads loose in the reverse order of tightening.dont know that it really matters but that is how i have always done it.

I had to use an impact on mine because the engine stand rolled around too easy hehe. A friend of mine who's a mechanic always takes them off with an impact. Of course, putting things back together you'd want to use regular hand tools and torque wrenches.

i usually take mine off with an impact.. i put them back on with an electric impact.. set to 15ft/lbs initially then to 45-50.. then i torque wrench it..

Never had a problem using an impact on removal either.

Thanks for the replies.

A dirt track racer I work with said he uses an electric impact gun to put his heads on too. Wow, I never woulda' thought.
