383: First Build

383: First Build
Hey Guys,
Looking for some input here. I have started assembling all the parts I need to start building my 383. I only have a few real criteria.
1.) Must be faster than the 240sx Turbo my friend is building. He is shooting for high 12's.
2.) Must be reliable. I am planning on a few decent length roads trips to school. (200 miles each way and i will do it 4-5 times per year)
Heres what I have:
Block: Bare 4-bolt main 2 peice seal block
Crank: Scat 383 crank
Rods: Forged Scat 6" Rods
Pistons: SpeedPro Hyper pistons for 383 with 6" rods
Heads: Trick Flow Twisted Wedge G2's. 190cc intake port and 2.02/1.60 valves (67cc Chambers)
Intake: I have a choice between a Performer or a Victor Jr.
Now, what should I do for a cam? I want to have the torque down low so its fun to drive but I don't wanna kill top end too bad either. I just want a nice comprimise.
I plan to have the block decked and run a .040 head gasket to keep the quench tight since the piston should be around 10.0:1 compression. They are about 9.3:1 with a 76cc head.
I just need some opinions on where to go from here.
I haven't decided on my in terms of driveline because I am waiting to finalize the motor. That means stall and rear end gearing are up in the air. All i know is I will be running a TH350.
Thanks in Advance,
Caleb

Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of how to get to 12's. Before we start getting into the science of this. What is your rear end gear ratio and differential? Also what transmission and if automatic what stall.
You can build a 10 second motor and run 15's all day. Let me know what you have and we can go from there!

Okay I see you want to get a TH-350 (must've missed that) now we have to talk about the cam and the stall then. You did not list a carb either.
So, you want like midrange power? You have a roller cam or flat tappet?

Hey Guys,
I am looking for something that is fun to drive. So I guess mid range would be what I want. As I said I need to make sure I beat this kid cause I won't let his turbod Jap beat the American Muscle.
I already have the Turbo 350. I plan on buying a converter that matches the cam but I don't want to go much about 2750-3000 because when cruising, I need to be above the stall. I plan to run a decent geared rear end, again that can be based off the cam. I will have a better idea of what I can get in the next week or so but I am not concerned with changing gears. I know I will have to buy a rear end so other than that its up in the air.
I have was planning on running a flat tappet and I would not be against solid lifters becuase adjusting the valves doesn't bother me. The only thing i need to worry about is valve to piston clearnace cause the Trick Flows cant the valve and they have a tendency to hit. I want to stay below 230 duration and .500 lift to help minimize this.
