Purge solenoid

Is the charcoal canister solenoid able to tolerate continuous current? I recently ditched the stock ECM, and the new one has no provisions for the purge solenoid. If it will handle it, I could rig the solenoid always open, or remove it. The solenoid always got hot with my old ecm, whenever the car was running. I am wondering if it is a PWM signal or a constant signal. Thanks!
