keeeping it running

what can i do to get my car to stay running the first time i start it up?

i dont drive it much but my 86 tpi trans am immediately dies/stalls within 5seconds after starting it up the first time.

but magically the second time it always stays running and idles beautifully.

any ideas?

Check the fuel pressure on the rail. Either you have a weak pump or a plugged fuel filter.

weak fuel pump? Shouldn't either of those 2 problems show problems while driving? the car runs great on he second turn of the key. I will definately have both checked or replaced. The fuel filter was checked and was told it looked fairly new. But after putting a lot of fuel cleaner it may have kicked up a lot of junk from the old old gas and clogged up the filter a little. I also considered the fuel pressure regulator giving a small leak of fuel in the engine while off and in a way drowning the engine and when i first start it up its almost clearing its throat. I know nothing of the fuel pump.

if i needed to replace the fuel regualtor...where could i go to get a nice better than stock? I've seen soem people on here with nice shiny poilished up aftermarket ones. I'll ask around the other threads.

Thanks for the suggestions. If you can think of anything else don't hesitate.
