Engine refresh being done, which aftermarket cam for stock L98?
Hi all,
I am rebuilding the L98 in the Camaro that i drive daily. It's blowing smoke upon start up, so it's probably the valve stem seals and possibly the rings too (over 130k miles).
I am going to yank the motor and replace the rings, crank bearings, rod big ends, and clean up the heads (check valve springs, reseat valve seats, etc).
Can anyone recommend a good cam to use with the stock setup, keeping in mid that in the next year or so i want to swap on a set of aftermarket aluminium heads and new intake. I would like to reuse the stock valvetrain too at the moment (if it's worth it?).
I'm unsure of the duration, lobe seperation, etc of a suitable cam. I'm thinking something from Comp, Crane, or Isky, etc...
Suggestions??
Thanks!!

How about a ZZ4 cam from General Motors. They work well in a stock situation. They have a nice sounding idle and make good power. If not I would recommend any of the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy roller cams, just pick one that fits into your RPM operating range and you'll be good to go.

throw on new valve springs now as well, they'll be ok to use on your future heads also. If the valves need replacing, or any head work at all, consider buying the new heads now, or going all out on the current heads, otherwise it's just money in the trash.
oh yea, so one of the first 2 in the comp xe series for 1987+ roller SBC motors that are FI controlled would work well. Roller XFI I think... Xr264 sorta thing I believe.
Or the ZZ4 would work as well. I think Lingenfelter makes an awesome one, 219*/? duration @.050", I forget the P/N, but it's got wicked nice ramp rates on it, it'll really wake the beast up.
