87 4 barrel would be a 305, i'd give it back and grab a 350 out of any year car and start from that instead. you'll be money ahead trust me.

Do more research before you spend any more money. Like stated previously, ditch the 305. Get atleast a 350 or maybe even a 400.

You can't bore a 305 to a 350. A 305 is really a shitty motor. It's pointless to spend money on it. If you spend the same money on a 350 you'll make more power. It'd just be a waste of time and money to drop a 305 in. It's not a cheap/overnight operation. You might aswell do it right the first time.

Chances are you're going to have to smog it some day. its going to be pretty obvious that it is not a V6, so the smog tech is going to know its a swap. He'll send you to the referee. In CA you can't swap a motor that is older than the year of your car. 88 was the last year for a carbed chevy passenger car, except 1989 Caprice station wagons with a olds 307(could be wrong about that one) So even if you use the 305 you'll have to TBI or TPI it to disguise it as a 1989 or newer. Unless you know someone in the smog business to take care of you and you never plan to sell it.
So next time you shop for a motor, you need to get the computer, harness, sensors , induction system etc. all in one package. Then tell the ref all you did was paint it.
