greatings everyone,
I have just bought a 91 formula, when i started it with the owner it had the ol sticky lifter noise or other valvetrain, I figured it was a stuck lifter because he had synthetic in it, and it was about - 35 C out that day. the noise is now gone, or a lot quieter. in my garage it starts easy and oil pressure goes up fast,,, but goes to 420 and above when reved. i also notice its spittin black liquid(burned oil?smells like it) whats up?

also, the metal hose things that come from the exhaust manifold and up and goes from 4 and gos into 1 is cut on both sides right where it looks like a ruber hose should go to. im guessing this is smog related? should they be sealed ? cuz they are not

synthetic would most likely cure a stuck lifter not cause one to stick, 420? I'm guessing this is metric, what kind of units?.. most likely a bad pressure sender, quite common on these cars. How much black liquid? A little bit is normal its simply carbon mixed with water, normal part of the combustion process, it will be much more apparant if you are running rich.

also on the exhaust it sounds like your describing the A.I.R. tube on the manifold.. do little tubes come up from the exhaust ports on the manifolds into the larger tube? If so thats what you are refering to, if they arnt blocked off it would be an exhaust leak.

sythetic should help the motor, but maybe was just to dam cold, the noise fixed itself, the amount of black out the pipes is very minimul , but still aparent, think that might be from over 2 year old gas sitting in the tank?
I'm not to worried about the black stuff, but the oil pressure is in KPA , and it maxes out the gauge quite nicely.

the smog looking stuff has me still stumped

Wouldn't worry about the soot out the tailpipes, the old gas may be contributing to it as well, the oil pressure issue is almost defently the sending unit as the gauges rarely break. Can you take a pic of the A.I.R. pipe you're describing and maybe we can come up with a solution for ya? does exhaust gas come out of it with the engine running?

Can't say it applies to all synthetics, but typically a synthetic will not thicken as much at cold temperatures as the same viscosity petroleum-based oil will.

Your ticking lifter was caused by something else.

Unless the synthetic was a off-brand, or a major oil brand like Pennzoil, Quaker State, or Valvoline.

At -35C I'd sure be making noise too, that's super cold. My car used to spit out quite a bit of black crap on the garage floor when cold. Pretty much just need to get it on the road and burn it all out.
