Jackstand Placement

Need to get the rear of my Formula off the ground a bit to work on the rear brakes/e-brake. Can I place jackstands under the axle, or can this possibly damage the axle tubes? Is my only option to place the stands under the rear jacking points on the chassis? I never have come to fully trust the jacking points on these unibody cars.

Thanks for any info.

ya me either. But as far as i know ya jacking it from the axles will hurt the car. But if u find a nice spot on the frame that hopefully is not all corroreded out it should be fine just place a couple under their if u don't really trust it and leave the jack to well that's what i do. I hate going under any car that's low.

Yea. I watched my jacking points bend under the weight of the EMPTY car. >.< That was comforting. I looked at the rear axle, and it looks like the rear sway bar (I might be wrong about that) is passing DIRECTLY under the axle tube, so you'd be putting jacks on the rear sway, which would definately bust that sucker.

You can jack and support the car by your rear end, that's 100% normal.
Put your jack under the pumpkin, just forward of the sway bar. Jack it up nice and high, and throw the stands under the rear axle, right on either side of the pumpkin, or anywhere you can where it's not impeded by the sway bar.

The rear of the car is pretty light.

ya where the "designated jacking points" were it like bent the frame and as i lifted it it started to crack and isn't even rusted out. But i lifted right behind the axle where the little oval cutouts are well not directly in them cause i feared that it would do the same as the side of my frame.

I've supported my (pig-heavy) GTA using jack stands under each end of the axle, and have done so for years w/ no apparent ill effects. Lifting the rear by the pumpkin (as Sonix suggested) also works well.

I don't blame you for not trusting the unibody jacking points - but if you get SFCs, it'll give you some more options for jack placement..

search my old posts. I posted a diagram showing the proper places to jack and support a F body. Tried to repost it but..... Use the keywords: jacking points
