milodon oil pan capacity??

hate do do this to you guys but it relates to a 68 mustange my roomate just bought. Its a 347 stroker with a milodon oil pan. He just bought it and changed the oil today. We got 3 gallons out......

The pan has no markings on it but i went to the milodon site and they only have 7 and 8 qt oil pans for engines this size. I cant find anything larger.

So we filled it with 2 gallons (8 qts) and its not reading anything on the dipstick. It is an aftermarket dipstick...maybe too short for this pan?

Aftermarket 'sticks are usually junk. Put a factory one in there. I had a Mr. Gasket on that was off by 1/2qt compared to the factory one.

I can't remember though... does the 289/302 dipstick tube go in the block, or the pan? I think its the pan, no?

Aftermarket pan and dipstick. They're not gonna jive. What you would normally do is fill the pan to capacity as recommended by the manufacturer then mark the new dipstick wherever the oil level is. It looks like you've probably got the wrong dipstick that doesn't reach far enough into the sump. The idea of the deep pans isn't so much to increase the fluid capacity of the engine as it is to get the oil away from the crank. Getting the oil down below the crank with a deep pan keeps the oil cooler, provides better windage and decreases aeration. 8 qts sounds like plenty of oil even for a deep pan. If you fill it anymore to get it to read on the stick you're going to have problems. Call Milodon and tell them what you've got. They should be able to tell you how much oil that pan needs. Fill it up with that amount and let it ride or find a longer dipstick.
