Fill the gas tank and put STABIL or somesuch water inhibitor in.
Use a properly mixed antifreeze in radiator.
I'd put a few drops of oil in each cylinder through spark
plug hole if you're unsure when you'll be firing it up.
Remove the battery and trickle charge each month to keep it fresh.
Park on a concrete or tarmac surface if possible if not protect the under carriage.
Throw a breathable cover over car to protect from uv and
crude.

I actually had a less complex method then what sofakingdom mentioned for my car after 10+ months of sitting. Put some fuel in it and turned the key. The fuel had either evaporated, or "evaporated" into my crack-head uncles gas-can, one of the two..
my freakishly good generic "everstart" battery was still charged somehow. I even used it through-out the course of it sitting (after several months through winter) to start another car that was having a charging problem.
I guess its different for every car. Though you shouldnt have to go to any great lenghts if it was still in working order when "rested".

i used to leave my car sit all winter, it took me 2 years to realize i was getting nasty flat spots in my tires and thats what was giving me bad vibration at 90 and above in the spring, now i leave the batt disconnected and take it out for a spin once a month, with no heat , i get dressed up and its nice and smooth

Your right, you technically shouldnt run the motor on synthetic until the rings are fully seated. But i think for this purpose you should be fine, all you have to do is run it for a few minutes to get the oil around then shut it off.
