Whats easiest way to get ignition cylinder out

I thought I had a vats problem but when i turn my key to the on position the fuel pump comes on and the vats prevents that right? Well anyways ima replace the ignition and just wanted to know if any of you guys have any hints. If you can help me Ill make you a snazzy custom signature like mine with your car in it. Thanks.

just follow the directions in your manual, it's about one of the easiest things you can do. you do mean the key cylinder right? by all means buy or rent the lock plate tool and a puller, it'll make you life a lot easier and save you a lot of time.

ok I did that and got the new lock cylinder in there but it seems to be something else. There is no spring to the switch when in the "start" position and all the accesories stay on even with the key in the "off" position

The lock cylinder is completely separate from the ignition switch. The switch is mounted to the top of the outer steering column jacket at the base of the column, just inside the firewall.

there is a rod that runs down the driver side of the column and it runs off a gear actuator gear piece that is turned by another gear on the shaft that the keyswitch turns,

the rod goes from the actuator gear piece up there and down to under the dash to the ignition switch, it pulls and pushes the switch through its different positions

sounds like either gear part broke in the column, or the rod fell out of place at the ign switch or the switch is bad

youll hae to inspect it all and replace what broke in it(usually the actuator link gear)or find another column if the ign switch is fine

read this thread, i posted a good pic of this stuff in here:

yeah yours may just be a problme with the rod or ignition switch then

you can lower the column under the dash real easily to help get at the switch and rod better, only takes a few minutes to remove the cover under the column and remove the two column clamp nuts under the dash right there

good luck

It was the rod. I put a resistor on the vats wires ,which were broke anyway part of my problem, and ripped open my lower segment of my steering column and the rod was not hooking on the acuator. Itll keep me goin till i can get a new one cause now its exposed and I can just hold it together long enough to crank it. Also It was broke down in the ghetto and i got a decent system in it. Whewwww. Once again thanks for all the help if theres anything I can do for anyone on this site pm me.
