Put in 5 quarts of oil...now I have more????

This is the dumbest question I have ever asked on this board...

I bought a '91 RS 3 weeks ago. The oil change sticker on the windshield showed the car wasn't overdue for a change based on mileage, but the oil change was due FOUR YEARS AGO! Yes, the previous owner only drove it 3,000 miles since 2002! So anyway, the first thing I did was change the oil obviously.

Now, I thought all the oil came out of the engine (the pan did look a little low for 5 quarts, admittedly)...it wasn't dripping anymore. I've put nearly 1,000 miles on the car since I purchased it, and I checked the oil earlier...its well over the full mark...based on the distance between the "Full" and "Add" lines on the dipstick, I'd say the car has almost 1 quart extra in it!

Is it possible the oil was so old that it was sludged up in the engine and didn't fully drain out? The oil looks great now, and it isn't burning any coolant...no white smoke, radiator and overflow remain at the same level as always. Anyone ever seen this before? I know I only put 5 qts in, because I bought 5 qts of Valvoline specially for the car, and I use Mobil 1 in the Z so it isn't like I grabbed an extra quart off the garage shelf by accident!

Any help is appreciated...I know how dumb this sounds...

The 5 quarts includes the oil filter. That can vary depending on the size of the oil filter you use. So did you also change the oil filter?

Another thing it could be though it would be bad news is blowby of gas into the oil. You should take a sniff and see if it stinks of gas or not

........

my camaro had the same problem...

it only drained out like 4 quarts

i was like WTF

but who gives a ****... what i did was add the oil to the Requirments of the DIPSTICK

also try this

Drain as much oil out as possible.. and take note of the type of Incline you are on... , im not sure off the top of my head which direction the "Drain PLUG is facing.. but have that drain plug @ The lowest Center of Gravity..... so everything will drain down... and out.....

u can use a flat surface too... but if u got a oppertunity to safely put your car on some sort of a incline in ur driveway..... do it.. i did it and everything always worked great...
dont forget e-brake and ur saftey.. not too big of a friggin incline.. but just a nice lil one that does the trick u kno

im assuming you normally change your filter, every time you change the oil

oh yah , dont forget to add a little bit less next time...... for the purpouse of not adding too much...

i always let the oil cycle a bit and process thru the oil filter a bit.... then check the dipstick , and work from there... when the engine is off...

i always save the last quart of oil.. to add.... after i add'd 4 quarts , so i could have Just the right amount because i have made the mistake of putting wayy too much oil... its funny.. it happens to the best of us lol... but not ever twice

I changed the filter, and one thing I remember was that the previous owner had the extra-long-style filter on the car, whereas I use the shorter type.

Maybe I didn't get all the oil out after all? I'm baffled. I remember checking the dipstick before I bought it and the oil level was just right...who knows...
