Which cam for my 355 please.

I have a 84 z28. My dad and I bought the car when i was 15. We built a motor for it. Its a 355 we had it all machined, all new parts. It has a edelbrock performer carb 1406 (600 cfm) edelbrock performer intake,th350 with shift kit,2200-2400 stall, Accel supercoil, headers, and a 3" flowmaster exhaust. The car has been sitting a long time with the engine out. I was shaving the firewall ect ect. I was wanting the most aggressive cam i can get with this setup. I like the loopy idle, but im more concerned about the power i will get. I was thinking a Comp Cams Xtreme 274. Can i go bigger, if so what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

The heads are stock. Im hoping to find a decent set on ebay for cheap. No work has been done to them. Except of course new valves and springs. The motor is early 70's we think. Not sure.

i'm running aluminum L98's (corvette heads), and the extreme XR276HR, and I love it, matches my setup pretty good. i would say the 276 is about all the higher you want to go, but stock valvetrain probably won't cut it, the lift is .503/.510, i guess you can consider my valvetrain to be highly worked to get this to work with 1.6 rr's, so my lift now is .536/.543 or so with the 1.6's..all he had to do is cut out the spring pockets, and install single groove valves so the spring seats way up on the top of the valve allowing for more lift. but look around, if you can find a good deal on heads, ****** them up. My valvetrain work as far as machining goes wasn't expensive at all. they can cut spring pockets real easy and for cheap...

Im 21 now. When we built this car my dad bought everything for it. (I worked it all off Now that im 21 im paying for it all. So im trying to find the best deals i can. What type of heads would you guys suggest? I would like to have this car LOW LOW 13's But most likely into the 12's. Which i know will take some money. I have 2 other fairly fast car, and i want it to keep up with them a bit

Leave it alone until you can afford to do it right.

you could copy my combo as far as heads and cam goes, and my setup is capable of mid-high 12's...

there are lots of choices out there for heads, basically any aftermarket head with 185-210cc intake runners would work good. Or some ported alum L98's but if your paying somebody to port them, your probably better off getting aftermarket. You can find some deals on used aftermarkets, my buddy just sold some pro toplines, 215cc intakes, and ported with all the goodies on them for like 900 bucks..it all depends on how much you want to spend. you can spend 800 on a pair, or 2 grand on a pair...it all comes down to speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go...

I'd go with an isky short oval track cam isky #201278 278-278-232-232 @.050" -.450" .450" 106LSA This is a powerfull cam with modest peak valve lift (no head machining) .450" lift.
"Degree" it in 4 deg advanced (102intake CL) ( cam timing offset bushing if nessessary) It will have the sound and performance you want. Will work even better if you were to home port your heads. The tight 106LSA will give you the cool "rough idle" .. Will want a modified distributor advance curve with lots of intial advance at idle. and a low rated power step up springs in the carb. (4")

use isky 205D or comp 981 springs or manley # MAN-22410-16 (drop on high perf) or if you're cheap use
Speed pro summit #SLP-VS-739R under $40

Summit Racing number ISK-201278 $99

exactly which "stock" heads do you have? (casting number)

All these cams will give you the sound you want but don't expect to make good power with the 882 heads. If you're on a strick budget. Find a set of "416" casting 305 heads and port them and add larger 1.94x 1.60 valves. (more compression and flow) lots more power. sell off the 882 heads to someone else that wants to go slow.

if you just have to run the 882 heads i recommend these two cams. Crane H-272-2 (HMV 272) or Comp cams 275DEH-10

Definately want to do something about those 882 heads. big chambered smoggers and are prone to cracking.

Just junked mine for a set of 416's and did just a hair of work on them. their on my new 355. Had lots of clearance for more lift, i measured a few of the valves and it appears it was good for .550 lift without any machining!

Alright i Found a set of heads of the original motor that came in my car, 84 Z28, the H.O 305 (L69) So i have those. They will prolly need a valve job and stuff, how much should the work they would need run?
