What oil do you guys use?

Yes, I already 'd. I think most of you like Mobil 1. This guy I met at a car show this weekend said he picked up a tenth using Royal Purple. Which do you all prefer? What weight?

I have a 1991 GTA with a 350 TPI.

Thanks,
Bill

P.S. What about rear differential fluid? I'm going to need to replace it when I get the rear fixed.

I have never run anything too fancy in my cars, at best it got Quaker sythetic blend 10w30 but then again i dont run the thing at the track hitting 7000RPM consistently...

As for the rear, is it a posi?

They can be very picky and sometimes just a regular mineral oil with the posi additive is better that a full sythetic top of the line!

One again in my rear (open) ive just used a mineral 75w90

In my 1998 Trans Am I run Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil. It also has Redline fully synthetic D4 automatic transmission fluid, and Redline fully synthetic 75W90 in the rear diff along with some GM limited slip additive to keep the chattering down.

I've heard of some guys running 5w30 in their 3rd gens too. Any benefit over 10w30?

Other the fact that its slightly thinner and may free up a pony or 2 if your lucky... No, not really...

You pick an oil that is suited best to your engine, If its a brand new engine with nice tight clearances 5w30 should be fine. if its an older motor and clearances are getting pretty big you may get some knocking and burn more oil than you would if you went with a thicker oil.

My old motor was rattling a bit and after an oil swap to 20w50 it purred again

main reason I use the 5w-30 rather then the 10w-30 is cold start up

the first number is how the oil acts when cold and since here in idaho we can have some cold times when I Start my car figure it couldn't hurt too much. it isn't really going to free up any horsepower being when the motor is warm 10w-30 and 5w-30 are going to be the same viscosity.

again the w number is the cold number

30 weight Rotella T diesel oil here. For the price and the added zinc you can't beat the good ole Shell Rotella T.

Well it looks like ill be dumping in the $1/gallon stuff for a while

Just sitting around tonight so i thought what they hey, ill go for a rip and see how it runs against the Grand Am again. Well it was pulling real hard off the line for once and with 0 detonation (for once) then at about 3500RPM in 3rd i heard some hard knocking (not deto!) and let off. pulled off to the side of the road only to have a nice cloud of blue smoke trailing me and some lovely knocking and rapping coming from the motor.

Oh well, another 350 bites the dust...

I've been told that the domestic oils have a better molecular composition than the overseas stuff. So I use Pennzoil (Pennsylvania oil). I think quaker state and a lot of other off the shelf stuff probably comes from the US.

But I stay away from 'Walmart's finest' cheap crap. That stuff is probably shipped strait from IRAN

I have seen Quaker State Q high horsepower pour out of a car with 10,000 miles on it and look extremely good for the milleage; impressive to say the least.

Mmm.. I think the conventional European oil has been a bit better than our conventional oils. They generally have higher OCIs than we do and iirc their minimums are mandated.

Generally, the Walmart and no-name brand stuff, is just repackaged brand name stuff. Not sure on the formulations though.
