AFR 195's or vortech heads with SDPC intake manifold??
So anyway....tossing the 195K 305 for a 350. But now trying to figure what I want to do for intake. Everything else (engine wise) is stock. I can spend about $1500.
I was considering getting AFR 195's ($1300) or maybe get the vortech heads with the tpi intake (about $1000 total with the EGR adapter).
This is a street car. I am just sick of low hp. What is the best buy?

The AFR's would blow the vortec's right out of the water...
But depending on the rest of the motor (if you actually need that much flow) you might be better off with vortecs.
For a $300 difference you may as well go with AFR's for the possibility of future upgrades.

I was thinking about future upgrades too.
I mean its either that or maybe stay with the stock engine and put on a modified lt1 intake.
Im so confused.
Damn...what to do. I want to make about 325-350 hp without changing the cam and not spending more than $1500

I just got off of the phone with a representative from AFR about 2 hours ago. I explained to him what I wanted to achieve from my 383 engine combination. The AFR 195cc Street heads will flow enough to make the 500ft. lbs of torque and 500 horsepower that I was looking for. So, there won't be any problems with you using that head. If you do decide to do other stuff in the future like cams, intakes, or a blower/nitrous, that head will be able to handle it flow wise.

Thats good info. Thanks alot! Any thoughts on what kind of power I might have with the 195's on a stock 350 engine with otherwise stock intake?

I don't know, honestly. Probably about the same power roughly. I mean, the heads only flow what the intake and camshaft will let it flow. If you were to switch your camshaft and intake(Performer RPM or even better an Air Gap) then you would probably see much better results.

The AFR heads will blow chunks on a motor with a stock cam. Totally inefficient and a waste of money. Get the Vortecs or put a cam in it. Why don't you want to put a cam in it?
And the AFR rep is right. I made 515hp with a pair of AFR 195's. Runs on pump gas and is driven to work AND runs 11.50's on street tires

A stock cam to any AFR's is an insult to them. The TPI won't be helping much, either.
I'm in the boat of having AFR's (not 195's, though), and loving them.

How about this vortec head combination. Seems to work just fine.

I agree AFRs are definately a big waste of money for a stock motor because the heads arent going to be much of the bottleneck.
They would be your best choice if you go with a larger cam, headers and either work over the TPI or go carbed. So when you have decent flow into and out of the motor the heads can net some big gains over stockers.

Those AFR heads will not only not help your top end much, but they will also probably hurt your low end performance because they are nowhere near matched with the rest of the engine.

For a street motor, midrange torque rules. Unless you go with a big cam and a MUCH more free-flowing induction system, I wouldn't waste the money on AFRs. The vortecs don't flow as well, but they should make phenominal torque, and still make way more horsepower than a stock L98. If you're keeping the TPI and a cam that's either stock or somewhat mild, I would be willing to bet that you'll make a lot more torque with the Vortecs, which will make the car feel faster on the street.

Go big or go home!
Why not pop in a larger stick and toss the TPI setup (and sell it to me for real cheap :P) Then you can put them AFR's to good use!

I've got a similar setup in my car but the heads aren't CNC'd, the chambers were hand done (heads only flow average or 2% less than the CNC version and peak flow was identical) I'm using shorter 400 length rods, much smaller cam and a 650 carb. Mine made 430hp/460tq on 89 octane.
