carb, trans, rpm/speedo issues

Ok this is my first post in here...be nice. I recently swapped out my stock TBI 305 for a new 350 carbed crate motor. I'm using the in-tank fuel pump for now, because I just replaced it and I don't feel like dropping the tank again. Anyway, we're running the Mallory #4309 3-port, down to 5.5psi for the carb, and the secondaries are pouring fuel. Black smoke comes out the back on acceleration...and smells, well....you know how it smells. On top of that, my RPMs won't hit above 2500, and my speedo won't go above 20. I can hear the engine accelerating, but the car just doesn't go anywhere. I did notice some sort of plug with three prongs hanging down when I was changing my oil the other day. Is this some sort of trans plug? It's got what looks like a green rubber gasket around it. I have no idea where it plugs in or anything. I don't even know what it is!! And the car shifts into Drive REALLY hard. The car lurched almost two feet in a parking lot the other day...thank god no one was parked in front of me, I would have smashed right into them. Even when I come to a stop at a light or whatever, the car acts like it wants to die, the RPMs drop to like 6...and then it picks back up again. My friend said it might be something with the torque converter lockup? I'm getting so frustrated with this damn car, I went from buying an EFI motor, then buying the parts for carb conversion and now this...ugh. You guys gotta help me....please

You have to install some sort of lock up for the torque converter. On a carb swap, most are vacuum switches that activate solenoids in the tranny. The tranny pan has to be dropped, install the new solenoids, and new wire connector to the tranny (replaces the wire you describe, plugs into tranny on driver side), and attach to the vacuum switch that gets 12volts. B&M, TCI, and others have kits - about $90 - check Summitracing.com.

THIS HAS TO BE DONE - or the tranny will be ruined.

Do you have the downshift cable (TV cable) connected to the carb linkage and properly adjusted? This is a major - if this isn't just right, the tranny will burn up before you get to the end of the block - because this one cable is all that tells the tranny when to shift!

THIS HAS TO BE DONE ALSO!

As far as the engine running, you'll have to start with basics - timing, fuel pressure, spark, etc. Did you swap to an HEI dizzy? You have to - the computer controls the stock dizzy, and now no computer, so no working dizzy, and no timing advance.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN HEI DIZZY!

There are several stickies above on the carb swap and requirements - don't drive it anymore until these things are corrected, or you'll end up needing a new tranny, and maybe a new engine! The search button is your friend also!
