Car: 1991 Trans Am GTA
Engine: L98(5.7 L TPI)
Transmission: 700r4(A4)
Axle/Gears: G80 RPO, 3:23s, Auburn Racer's Diff
crane hyd. roller cam, timing chain, and pushrods

I can get the following items used for $300

crane hyd. roller cam (214*/220* duration @ 0.050 .452/.465 lift)
crane lifters timing chain and pushrods

Will they go right into my 1991 GTA 350 TPI? Or will I need to buy other parts to make it work? How much of a HP gain should I see? (I have no mods as of now.)

Will these make my car have a rough idle? I still want it to be streetable.

Is it worth it, or do you guys reccomend something else?

Thanks!
Bill

So you suggest I steer clear of it?

My only thought was that is low lift for a roller cam and 214 degrees of duration at .050. It will work with your stock heads. I was thinking of maybe adding 1.6 roller rockers but that puts the exhaust at .496 which may be to much for your stock heads.

If you have to pass emissions, and most everything else on the car is stock-ish, it's not too bad of a cam, with 1.6's and new valve springs. Make sure the pushrods are correct (may want to buy a pushrod length tool to get an exact meausurement of what's needed). Could see 30-40hp more from that cam.

Heres my 2 cents..

Don't use the cam.. Rip off your l98 heads, and buy some trickflows. Get a cam around 224/230 @ .050", .502/.510 on 112lsa.

That is not a roller cam.

Here's the exact same thing. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=SUM%2DK1103 It's a generic, el cheepo, ancient grind; OK for alot of things, but not the best for anything. And most especially, NOT for a TPI motor.

Note the price for the cam and lifters: $70.

$300 is about 2 to 2.5 times what that stuff cost new. That's not a "deal". Somebody is trying to rip somebody off, whether intentionally or not.

Did you look at the link?

I think we can excuse him for fat-fingering a digit.

Guys, thanks for letting me know! I almost got screwed.

Here's my perdicament. I'm a poor military/college boy who loves his Trans Am. But, it needs mods. Must...go...faster... I was looking into the LSx swap, but there's no way I can afford it until a few years from now. I don't want to pour money into my motor if I'm gonna get rid of it anyway. What really sucks is that I hafta pay everyone to do the work, cuz I'm not really a gear-head. The most I can do is change oil, some basic wiring, that sort of thing.

So, should I just stick with mods that don't involve the motor for now, like suspension, posi, etc? Or, should I say goodbye to the LSx idea and tune up my motor?

My main issue is that I want streetability. The LSx's have way more HP then my TPI and are streetable. I have a feeling if I put the money in my motor to get it to say, 300-400 rwhp, it wont be so street friendly anymore.

Thanks!
Bill

So Joe, did you look at the link yet?

The numbers look familiar?

wgripp, yes that would be a good idea. Look at it this way: you're going to need that stuff to get your money's worth out of WHATEVER you do under the hood. Doesn't matter whether you swap out for a later motor, or build up what you've got; hooking power to the ground will be a good thing regardless.

The gears you choose would depend on your ultimate motor decision; a TPI motor will not respond well to too much gear because of its restricted RPM range, whereas any LSx motor will effectively use all the gear you can throw at it. 3.42 is about as far as you'd want to go with the L98, but you could use 4.10s with the LSx swap.

Could be, in which case I mistakenly identified it.....

I still don't think it's worth $300, used. That's almost the same as that pile of stuff was new.

And that's not all that good of a cam, either. Kind of like a GM cam, where they took some ancient profile, and just stuck it on a roller blank without taking any advantage of the profile improvements that the roller concept makes possible.

To take an otherwise stock L98 and spend the $450 or so that it's going to take to put that cam in it, what with gaskets and fluids and a water pump and hoses and belts and vacuum lines and all the other might-as-wells and stuff that won't survive the experience, would be a GIANT disappointment and waste of money. Even if it is a roller.

It's a pile of crap cam, and nah it's not worth 400. Not for used stuff anyway.

A lot of guys used to run those on stock TPI cars. I think he should go with a slp 51010 or the comp equal, and some new heads.

But I couldn't for the life of me understand why you thought it was a non roller. I read the post over numerous times, and I just didnt get it.
