ignition question

Hey guys, I've searched and that didnt help me any..i'm trying to figure out if i change the ignition for my 89 camaro with VATS, does the new key i get with the ignition have to have a chip on it? the reason i ask is because i just replaced it, and it wont start, but the key doesnt have a chip in it.. my old ignition has a wire that came off from inside the unit so i can't fix it. not that skilled. but the new ignition is in, and when i turn the key everything starts up but the engine.. thank you for any help.

James

I had to do this on my 89. The new ignition with vats comes with a blank key. now you have to take that key to the dealer and get one made. you should bring your old key with the chip in it and your new dummy key. I paid 25 bux for mine but I heard of people paying about 80. so good luck.

i had actually saw a person take the old ignition and put the key in it. and just tuck it up under the dash and use the new ignition without the chip
