I bet he wants to run a cold air pickup for the motor. That's what I would do with a 6"x6" hole .
I'm pretty sure you can cut it away. If you want you could just make it strong again by adding a thicker steal plate to the edge but I'm almost SURE you don't need to do that. That point doesn't support the radiator, doesn't do anything for the structure of the car, engine cradle, tranny crossmember or struts so go ahead and cut.
I planned on removing it when I finish my aluminum air box.

I think you will be fine. I mean all that sheet metal is, is a battery tray anyways.... I doubt it has any structural duties - and even if it does, you aren't cutting the entire thing out. I actually am thinking about cutting mine up a bit right there, and running a cold air setup as well. My future plans call for a Ram Air hood, but seeing as I don't see the funds being available anytime soon, I might hook up a cold air setup through that area for now.... Once a hole is cut in that tray, you can set up a nice cold air setup that will even have a ramming effect if a nice inlet is attached near the air dam.
I say go for it......

Im gonna try and get a 3.5" exhaust pipe and get a 90* mandrel bend in it, then run it through the hole, with will probably be a circle instead of square, so it looks neat and professional . and get some sort of scoop under the car, and evetualy see about getting the pipe ceramic coated, maybe i can find some sort of coating that isn't supposed to be used to headers so it will be cheaper, cause i know exhaust companys are getting alot of profit on coating headers just because they know its popular, but enough of that. ill keep yall updated with pics and stuff, this should be cool.

Breathment, get header spray paint... it works, and it's only like $5 a can.
As for placement of a filter there, be careful, because that sh*t gets wet there real fast. My canister has a hole underneath it, and when it rains that whole area gets wet. Even washing my car does it.
