The simple answer is that they don't. I have an 83 Trans Am with the power bulge hood and theres always water on top of my air cleaner lid. Its never been a problem though.

people do water injection on some motors to cool the incoming air, so I can't imagine a little bit of rain would hurt too much

i always thought the filter was supposed to do alot at stopping the water. my mom drove a rental car through high water once, took out the air filter after it was acting wierd, and it was dripping wet, but the engine was fine.

What about cowl hoods--they are open in the back, right? They would let a little water in, wouldn't they? I think I may open up the back of my power bulge hood

I'm planning on getting a 3.5" cowl hood sometime in the future--US Body makes them for firebirds and they look great on them!--and I've been wondering about this.
Anyone have any information on this--don't want to mess up anything like my distributor with an open powerbulge or cowl.

With a stock ram air hood I would assume that since the openings on them are fake no water gets in. If like mentioned the openings are real most of the water would get distributed evenly all over the engine compartment.
