i give up..this problem is the mother of all problems
car starts..
goin down the same way i always go..
my car will all of the sudden start "spitting and sputtering" acting REALLY wierd. if you play with the throttle while its doing this. it will kill..but i actually floored it..it gets really weak then it jumps and hauls a$$.
now...if the car dies...you may get it to start again...if it does..you wont make it but another hundred yards..then...if it dies again..the starter acts like it has heat soak cause itll act like it just has enough juice to go turn over really slow.
temp is normal
oil pressure is present
got 14 volts
if it dies..i park it and come back to it a few hours later.(i usually phone a friend to pick me up)
the wierd part...is that it does this in ONE spot...its always does this in the same part of the road. before..and after the overpass that i go under....
my tranny fluid is just a little bit low
this always happens about 15-20 mins into the ride..

Maybe is some kind of worm hole into an alternate universe. Really, though I would suggest clogged exhaust somewhere, but if it only happens in a certain spot that's weird.

Check you altenator, my sisters car experienced similar weird *** shyte when hers was going out. The ECM kept on shutting off and caused the car to flip out.

Same sort of thing used to happen to my 85 Sport Coupe right when I bought it. Turned out it just really needed a tune up. My plugw were completely black and oily plus my dist cap was tarnished pretty bad. I chnaged that stuff and added new wires and it was mostly solved. I don't know what to say about the starter cranking slow. your alternator is probably on the way out and your battery isn't getting fully charged.

The fact that it does it in the same place is probably due to the fact that the engine happens to reach the right conditions at that point (assuming you're leaving from the same place every time). I had a similiar experience once. Everyday after I would leave work the IROC would fire up nicely and drive normally until a certain point in the road when it would just shut off. I got really aggrivating. It turned out that the ESC module was taking a crap and it just happened to heat up to temp the was making it freak out at that point in the road. So, I think you can rule out any electromagnetic interference from alien life forms.
Let's start from the simplest point. Is the ECM giving you an SES light??

check the vacuum hose that goes to the MAP sensor if you still have the computer controlled carb and distributor. if it is partially clogged, you may not get a code, and your car will run like crap becuse the fuel curve won't ever adjust and you'll get no ignition advance. this means your engine is leaning out and flooding and stuff. not sure with this at all, just throwing out an idea.

Check your fuel pressure regulator. When a fuel pressure regulator starts to go out it will flood an engine. Sounds to me like your spitting and sputtering is from the engine flooding. When you floor the car, the ECM kick into "flood gas" mode and basically cuts off all fuel to the engine until the extra fuel from the flooding is burnt up which is why when you floor it, it hesitates and then jumps up and takes off.

Check your exaust. I had the cat stop up on an 87 IROC I had and it caused the same symptoms. The car would run fine for a while and then lose power and backfire. I found the problem when a backfire blew a piece of the cat out of the tailpipe.
