Bought an LT1, converting to carb- within.

Well we got a hell of a deal on a 95 LT1. The motor costs us 600 dollars for everything, starter and all. GM is the only company that makes a carburator intake for these style aluminum heads. We are using that manifold with an HEI distributor and perhaps a zz9 cam. Anyone have any suggestions on this combo??? Camshaft ideas that might make more power. I have heard those motors will instantly make 350 HP just by converting to carb.

Yeah, how the #ell do you do that? I didn't think the block had provisions for a stock style distirbutor.

Yeah, u can run a distributor on one. The manifold you buy comes with the hole cut out for the distributor. The lt1 uses the same style cams as the l98. It will be able to drive the distributor.

I have run a carb'ed LT1 for about 2 years now, and I'm pleased with it. I have a stock LT1 bottom-end, with:
- LT4 heads
- LT4 HOT cam kit
- HEI
- GM dual plane intake
- 750 Demon Mech Sec carb
- 1 3/4" shorties

I run a modified-for-racing 700-R4, with lockup provisions. The converter is a 10", about 3000 stall.

It runs on pump premium. The car runs 12.20's-30's on motor. It is running 11.40's on a 100-shot of nitrous. I 've just jetted it to a 150-shot, but haven't made any good passes yet, although I did just smoke a new Vette running a 150-shot.

Anywho, it's a great combination. I don't think you'd give up too much sticking with the stock heads. The HOT cam is nice, and the package, which includes the cam, springs, and roller-rockers is a steal from GM at about $450.

Once I lock the converter up on the interstate the car gets 17-19 mpg. It gets probably 10-12 around town without the converter locked....

Wow thats some fast times. What are you 1/8th miles times and MPH??? Lt4 cam sounds like the way to go. I assume those times are on slicks. Did you run into any problems??? Stock bottom end??? I would be happy with high twelves from the motor.

Brandog, it runs 7.75-.85 1/8th mile. I'm still working on the right way to launch. It runs quicker if I flash the converter rather than power-brake it, but is a little less consistent.

All of the times mentioned are on Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tires, not slicks. I think it would go slightly faster on slicks, but not make a huge difference. I wanted to set it up to be able to drive it to work, home, and straight to the track.........which is what it does!

One thing I've learned is that the motor does not need real steep gears.........

I used to have a 2400 stall converter from SLP and 4.11 gears, and it ran 12.80's on the motor.
