Do you have a 305 like your name implies or a 350?? If it's a 305, the 305 S/R torquers or Aluminum L98 heads will be your easiest bet since they both have 58cc chambers to retain compression. However, the Vortecs are so cheap you could afford to have them milled a bit to remedy that and still come in under the other two choices initial price (new anyway). The Vortecs will outperform either on a 350 where you don't have to worry about the 305's bore shrouding the valves. Not sure how that will come into play with each head on the 305...
If you're talking about a 350 to start with, The Vortec's will easily beat out the 350 S/R Torquers as well. Check out http://www.inter-scape.com/ray/heads...eadstest_4.jpg , it has both flowed. Not to mention the Vortec has a better combustion chamber design.
I don't know about Jim Pace's kit, but many people have had good luck with the Vortecs, a CompCams extreme energy grind, and a Performer or Performer RPM Vortec carb intake. I'm assuming you have TBI on your RS so you'll need to take into account a TBI adapter or a TBI specific Vortec intake (I think Scoggin Dickey sells one).
Also, the only real limitation of the Vortecs in stock form for your average street performance car is the max lift they can handle. .480" lift is the absolute max you'd want to run, and that is over the recommended numbers from GM (multiple people are running that with no problems I'm aware of, but it's pushing it...). I'm running the CompCam's XE262 with .462/.469 lift on them and it does work fine with no problems. That's a 350 btw, that cam is probably a little on the big side for a 305 with an auto... The vortecs will handle any of the mild 305-aimed cams just fine as most are under .460 lift...

No, just 1.5s with the XE 262 (.462/.469 lift with 1.5s) and stock springs.

The issues with running Vortecs in Ca. is the lack of EGR passage to the intake. You can still rig up an EGR system to work and pass a functional test, but it will not be CARB approved, in which case you'd need a very lenient smog inspector, or you'll be changing heads every two years. Same goes for the Corvette L98 Al heads too.
