Pinning rocker studs. Good idea or not?
I went to the machine shop and told them that I will be installing ZZ3 cam. Asked them about the screwed in rocker studs and they said that they could go that way or if I want ot save money they can PIN THE OLD ROCKER STUDS.
I want to save money like most of us but if this is not a good idea i will pay for the screwed in studs.
What do you guys think of this PINNING?
Thanks.

I would just go ahead and get the screw in studs. From what I've heard the pinning is effective. However what happens in the event that you need to replace a rocker stud? You could possibly have to go so far as to remove the head and take it to the machine shop to have them remove the old stud and the pin, then pay them to re-pin it. If you have the screw in studs then in the unfortunate circumstance that a stud needs replaced then all you have to do is remove it and replace it with the head still on the car. Just my opinion, and opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one.

Pinning the stud will work fine.
The spring pressure needed to run the ZZ3 cam barely requires it anyways. Personaly I'd find a better cam. The ZZ4 that replaced it makes more power and torque, and is readilly available (takeoffs). To replace the stud if ya break one just drive the pin out and pull the stud.

Generally pinning the studs will work ok but it's not the "way" to do it,you weaken the stud/boss and I've seen some crack and fail. My moto is do it right the first time it's cheaper in the long run.

get the heads milled and tapped for the screw in studs. pinning isn't an answer or option for long lasting results

It costs essentially the same to pin them as it does to put in the right thing. Don't spend 90% of th emoney to do it right and only settle for a 25% job.
And of course, if one of your pull-out studs has already caused trouble, you can be fairly sure that it won't be long before the others do too. Don't half-*** it, you'll just be using your own money as the weapon to shoot yourself in the shorts.

Daniel,
If you're not planning on using push rod guide plates, you can install screwed studs for about $20.00, less if you already have some tools.
