air compressor squealing

as the titles says my air compressor is squealing, its an 84 ta, with the v-belt system. i read somewhere where it could use "oil"? what type would this be and where would i put it in? also i read that if you put too much you could ruin it...or too little won't do much...so what would be the proper amount?

thanks

might be a hard question for you to answer, but do you mean air pump or AC compressor when you say air compressor?

its on the right infont of the master cylinder, aswell you can see two polished pipes coming out of it then the two larger hoses that run across the front of the engine bay

That is the AC compressor. Is it more like a grinding noise than squealing? How is the belt? Good shape? Lose? Only when AC is turned on or all the time?

belt was replaced about 2 months ago and is in mint condition, its not too lose and hopefully not to tight. and its a constant squealing. with every turn of the compressor as if something were scarred on the internals...if i spray in the crack with wd40 it goes away for a few momemnts then returns

The WD 40 tells the take. The clutch on the AC is shot. Not much you can do cept replace it with a new one.

You can just replace the clutch.

That would be much cheaper and easier than replacing the whole compressor. To replace everything the R-12 would have to be drained, evacuated and recharged. Where I am it is illegal to use now but a few shady places will still do it.

I had the same problem. I just chopped off the belt. I want my AC back so I will fix it next spring.

well i know there isn't anything left in the lines by just pressing that release valve and nothing even attempted to come out....so i figured no pressure is left in it.... if i were to replace the whole thing so my ac works what would be needed...would i ahve to go with a new compreser, new condensor, new lines...and...? or could i just hopefully find a replacement, and get that R-12a (i think its a spray can fill/recharge for the system...aftermarket). thats if i can find a way to pressure test it to see if it will not leak or not.

If your system is indeed empty, replace the compressor, and have a shop recharge the system for you with R-134a. R-12 is hideously expensive, approaching 30 bucks a pound, and you need 2.2? or around thereabouts.

what would happen if i just too off the belt (i have the v belt system) so it would wrap around fan crank and air compressor where the other owuld be fan alternator and crank.... as well as a crank steering pump belt.. would it throw things off? or would it operate normally or would i have to alter somethings?

No problem removing the ac belt on a v belt system. I got rid of my air pump belt too. The PS, Alt and water pump have plenty of surface area on the belts/pulleys to keep everything going fine. Thats the one good thing for v belt vs serpentine.

but wouldn't it create an unbalance in things? like possibly to make the other wobble since there isn't even pressure i guess on both sides (alt- fan crank) vs (fan-ac comp- crank)

Mine has been like that for a few years now and there are no problems. Would be just like a car without AC.

oh ok cause that would be my only worry about removing it...just creating strain or pull to one side therefore making it wobble or something.... so ill probably take it off today then
