Car: 1989 Pontiac GTA Hardtop.
Engine: ZZ4 - 350
Transmission: Garbage
Hey man, I don't know all that much about engines, but all my life every time I change the oil in any of my cars, it always smells a little like gas. The funny thing is that I changed the oil in both my cars today (1989 GTA & 1997 Dodge Intrepid) and I was wondering the same thing. Even though it always smells like this, I just wondered about it today.
Take care
Mike

Mine never smelled like it in three other cars until I got the IROC, and when I had 2 Accel injectors dump a load into the engine while it sat it really smelled like it, and thinned Mobil 1 20W-50 down to where it was as thin as 0W-30. If it's strong and the oil is thinned out you need to change it ASAP and find out why. Gasoline is a solvent and not a good lubricant for bearings, etc. Could just be running too rich in your case.

leaking injectors or bad fuel pressure regulator, and i always wondered if maybe the rings could also be bad. my last car had that problem, smelling oil..

That happened to my L69 when my TPS went bad and ran the carb too rich. Not really a good thing. Presently the oil still smells faintly like fuel, but not nearly as strong and pungent as it was with an over-rich carb.

Bad fuel pump, if it's a block-mounted carb pump...
