Relieving Fuel Pressure

89 RS 305 TBI.... gotta change the fuel filter...gotta relieve fuel pressure. Pulled both fuses that are labeled F/P but the motor just keeps running and the pump keeps energizing. What the hell is going on???? Thanks

I just addressed this with the car I'm working on now, I originally went just to replace the fuel filter, and the car kept on running when I tried to relieve the pressure. Unfortuanetly after many many hours of trying to figure out why, I found out I have a bad fuel pump, woohoo. What it is doing is allowing the engine to keep pulling gas through and not stalling out. On the plus side, I checked by removing a hose (ready with a gas tank to drain into) and there was no big pressure, it just squirted a little bit then stopped. Filter got replaced easily enough... now I am just trying to figure out how to unwedge the gas tank to get the the pump. Hope you don't have to go to such drastic repairs as I, and good luck.

well, i think when u take the fuses out, that just keeps the injectors froms firing, not the fuel pump. usualy if u wait a few hours, supposivly, acording to the chiltons manual, the fuel pressure will relieve its self when u take the gas cap off.

or unscrew the fuel pressure shrader valve and relieve the pressure with a screw driver, with some paper towels really close by.

or just take off the filter and let all the fuel pressure come out then. i seem to always use the last method.

I dont thinks its cuz I have a bad fuel pump cuz when i turn the key on with both fuses out, I hear the pump kick on, even with its fuse out. What is causing this cuz I am stumped. Also, if i just loosen the fuels lines at the filter, how much spray should I expect. I really dont wanna burn my eyes out over a fuel filter. thanks boyz

It's not that big of a deal. Just loosen the fitting and then use a rag to unscrew it by hand. The rag will block fuel from spraying on you.

Another method you could use is to unplug the fuel pump. the conector is just above the the rearend. It will be the only conection in the area. Crank it or if it starts let it die and your in business.
