Now I AM VERY worried

New problem arose, now the first time I heard this was probably about a week or two ago, it wasnt there when I bought the car but now I am starting to get very worried.

Everytime I accelerate in the car, I hear a ticking noise, or a clicking noise, or a creaking noise whatever you want to call it.

Now it doesnt do this ALL the time perse, it does it on some occasions, now I was told earlier today that my friend has to replace or rebuild his engine due to the creaking noise, I believe he said something about the rods being out of place and it banged up against the engine compartments I didnt quite hear him out too well. This makes me worried, I dont know what could be causing this ticking noise, and I am not absolutely sure where it is coming from either. I sometimes think its coming from the engine bay, but then other days on the side of my car, under the car, or wherever...

Please can anyone rest assure me that its not my rods and that I dont have to get a new engine. My *** if so that would suck...for me because this is my daily driver.

could it be an exhaust leak?

I plan on changing out my entire exhaust fairly soon, within a month's time span.

Try pulling a few degrees of timing out. A bottem end knock will usually knock all the time, idle, cruise, accelerating, etc. I think you are getting detonation or ping.

youre talking to a car retarded person here, I just bought this car a month ago and I need to get the manual for it first...

But this doesnt sound like a pushrod problem or anything, I really need this car its my only mode of transportation, its been driving excellently with me since I got it, very responsive, excellent handling.

I just get worried when I hear unusual things...

Shaken, or stirred?

What engine? What fuel system? Manual or automatic?

Its a 305 TBI LO3, it sounds like its shaken actually, I really hope its not the pushrods, this car is my highlight, I love it, I cant afford to lose it.

Its an Automatic.

Could it just be injector noise?

Maybe just change the oil and see what happens.. how long has it been since you've done that? Sometimes changing the oil will fix unkown problems, and changing the oil can't hurt anyway.

If it is detonation or ping, try using a higher grade of gas,try premium.(91 octane or higher).

If it is, you should be able to rev the engine in park and duplicate the noise. You should be able to find said leak with the front end in the air by carefully feeling close to the exhaust where it is making noise and feel the leak blowing on your hand (don't touch it, it will be very hot).

Sometimes the best place to start is yer basic tune up. Change the oil, spark plugs, cap rotor, wires.

When you get a manual, there should be a picture chart on the spark plugs that will help you diagnose how your engine is running.

Inspect your oil, look for metal shavings or anything out of the ordinary.

I'll be picking up the manual in the afternoon today. Its kind of scary though, its the only functional set of wheels I have at the moment and if something were to go wrong now I'd be stooped.

Thats why I want to learn how to fix my car, I want to know where things are, how they work, what they do, and if I feel itchy about something check it to make sure its allright.

I changed the oil at the beginning of the month Id say and I am about 1000 miles away from changing the oil again, (this month I drove almost 3000 miles which is unusual for me)

Is there anyway to check the tranny fluid? Do I have to get under the car and check it there or can I check it from under the hood, also where is the TV cables located on the LO3 TBI, I have yet to find them, I know they have a tech article online here but I cant tell where they are from looking at that.

To check your tranny fluid there will be a dipstick up top just like the oil. It is towards the back I believe on the passengers side. Check it while the engine is running and warm.

IMO, the Haynes manual would be the best for you to get. Chilton's are excellent as well, but they assume you have a basic knowledge of cars already. Haynes is real good with step by step instruction and plenty of pics. I usually buy the Haynes.
