Starter!!!!!!!!!

I just installed a new starter... Its a small high torque one turning over a 383 Stroker... When I installed it, it worked perfect. I turned it off and on several times to make sure it worked good and was aligned right... Everything seemed fine... Than i went out for a drive around the block and came back and it made a grinding sound.. Now it wont turn off it just grinds... Any ideas?

Maybe its too close and getting stuck on the flywheel? Needs to be shimmed?

If you pull the starter pinion out and hold it engaged to the flywheel, you should be able to stick a paperclip between the gears. If the paperclip is loose remove shim, if it won't go in add shims. Use regular (small) paperclips. In machinists terms .020" clearance.

See, they are good for more than pulling codes

Sounds like you might have some eccentricity in your flywheel and you just happened to R&R at the low spot.

I put a TCI high torque starter on my engine, and no matter how it was shimmed, once i turned the engine over and went under to check it, the gear stayed on the flywheel. Im wondering if when i start the car for the first time, is the gear gonna stay on the flywheel and spin at 2k, or does it let go. I've pushed it off and retried it to make sure it worked everytime and it always jumps right back on, it just never lets go.. any ideas? I never got to see what the stock starter did since it had that sheild covering the gears,

Thanks,

Scott
