Oil Pressure Too High

I noticed at the start of a 200 mile trip, that my oil pressure was off the scale at the high end. It fluctuated but remained high. I pulledover at a gas station to check my oil and found it slightly low but not at a level to worry about. The problem went away for 3-4 weeks. In the last week, I noticed the problem once again. i checked my oil and noticed the level was a little lower so I added some oil. The problem remains. Any idea why or what's wrong? Thanks.

Most likely your oil sending unit is bad.

I agree, probably the sender. After 200,000 plus miles, my oil pres and water temp sensors were totally flaky.Sometimes reading accurately, sometimes off by 100%!Get some mechanical gauges and know what's really going on in your motor.

First off...I don't think that a low oil level would produce a high pressure situation. Can anyone back me up on this? This could be caused by a faulty sending unit/guage like said before...otherwise it could be something clogging an oil line. Another possibility would be too thick of grade of oil...what oil are you running...has it been changed lately?

I'm using 10W-40 which I've been using since I got my car (more than 2.5 years). I am due for an oil change though.

If my gauge is reading high oil pressure and my sending unit is bad, does that mean:
A. That my engine is overflowing with oil and there really is high oil pressure or
B. That the gauge is not indicating the correct pressure or
C. Something else?

Change the sending unit, when I first got my car the oil pressure gauge was pegged and the previous owner installed an aftermarket gauge.

yes, i am having the same problem but i know it is not the engine b/c it has 100 miles on it, my oil gauges reads but is very jumpy and the temp gauge will work sometimes and not others. I tryed to get a new temp sensor but i kept getting the wrong part. How much do these things cost and does anyone have the right part number? Also what about the oil pressure sensor.

I own an 84 TA with about 120,000mi on it. My gauge does the same thing, and I get my oil changed on time, and it's never low or too full. Where is that sensor, I might just decide to change it myself. But, it's really not causing any problems.
